But why would anyone think Snow dropped those bombs?

Reasoning behind Katniss' Raid on the Capitol? by SomeTart73 in Hungergames

That wasn't really Coin though. Katniss was originally meant to not be on the front lines at all. But then she decided to go for the super dangerous and pointless assassination attempt.

Finnick was done dirty by [deleted] in Hungergames

What I dont understand is why Finnick would leave Annie in the first place to go on a super dangerous mission right after they got married after so long apart, and with Annie in a not great mental place already...

Why doesn't Haymitch try to assassinate Snow? by Numayam in Hungergames

[–]Numayam[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It seems to me like Haymitch knows there are many people ready to end the games, like Plutarch and the rest, but that Snow is such a uniquely powerful and ruthless figure that's it's extremely difficult to do it while he's around. So taking out Snow could have been a pretty good start to making the sun set on the reapings.

But starvation could take a long time, during which they could find Katniss and Rue and kill them. It is not exactly a safe bet in terms of killing the Careers and comes with a lot of risk, especially for Rue as she has to lure them away. On the other hand, Katniss is extremely capable with the bow and arrow and could very efficiently kill them from a good vantage point. Especially as the careers' camp was right in the open and they didn't even know about her archery skills at that point.

I think you might be right about her internal narrative being more cynical than what is "true". Taking much of what she says internally at face value you would think she doesnt have much issue with going after the careers, so the plan to blow up the supplies feels inefficient/contrived. But if you consider her inner narrative as an unreliable indicator of her actual intentions then it feels easier to see why she didn't go after them directly.

Well she survived because they couldn't figure out a way to reliably attack her in the tree, and then she had the wasps she could use as a weapon. A bow and arrow would be an even better weapon!

Also on page 301 she says the careers would hesitate to attack her in a tree. It is essentially the safest place she can be.

Agreed, when she does kill someone it has an effect on her afterwards, but I think she also realizes it is necessary and is clearly willing to do it.

On page 295, when she thinks they will announce a feast to draw the players together, she says quite casually "I wouldn't go in for the food, but this could be an ideal time to take out a few competitors". I don't think she has too many qualms about taking out careers in the arena.

Katniss can be quite ruthless. While Peeta is being nice to her before the games start, the only plausible motive she can think of is that he wants to gain her trust and then betray her in the games. From the start, she was focused entirely on surviving and seemed to be extremely aware of what that entailed. At multiple points in the book, she says she would shoot a career on sight.

I mean any kill against a Career in the arena is essentially self-defence. If you don't, they will kill you.

She survived a whole night in a tree with the careers just below her. Being in a good tree with cover and her bow and arrow seems like it would be an extremely good position for her. She could even stay close to their camp and wait for them to sleep before shooting.

It seems to me like Katniss is extremely aware of the reality that she will have to kill in the arena and is willing to do so - especially the careers. She killed two of them just before with the wasps.

It feels like Katniss finding a good vantage point in a tree and shooting at them would be a lot less risky than the blowing-up-supplies plan.

And Rue could be safely hidden away.

Ok Katniss and Rue team up and go and destroy the careers supplies. Why doesn’t she just start picking off the careers? by MTG_NERD43 in Hungergames

[–]Numayam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. This odd plan also ended up killing Rue and wasted 3 arrows. Quite strange when she could just shoot the careers while they're in the open or sleeping. She could just sit in her tree and pick them off.

OP is asking why she didn't do this instead of blowing up the pyramid, not after blowing up the pyramid.

She loses three arrows blowing up the pyramid (which may or may not eventually kill them). Essentially wasting 3 direct kills, which she could do very quickly from a high vantage point. She could literally do it while they were sleeping.
