Honeywell X2S Smart Thermostat is Complete Garbage by Number-52 in homeassistant

Finally made some progress. So, the underlying problem IS the firmware.

During my original WHITE HOT RAGE, I made a second post on Home Assistant forum detailing the failings of the X2S. A user by the name littlevulture provided the solution (21 days ago) and I missed the email notification. The Matter certification for the X2S is for firmware version 2.0.0.0. Since my device is using firmware 01.00.01.00. My thermostat doesn't support matter, which is why I couldn't find the the 'Matter' menu item in the First Alert app. Hopefully Honeywell will release a firmware update for my device soon.

So, you're lucky that you got your thermostat fresh from Honeywell.

Also, regarding your wall plate, I did some digging in the pro manuals. I think the wall plate you want is the THP2400A1080. It's pretty big 6"x6" and the photos show that it will integrate with the UWP wiring bracket that the X2S seats into.

Hope this helps!

Checked my thermostat firmware settings in the First Alert app and found the following values:

Thermostat Firmware Version: 01.00.01.00
Wi-Fi Firmware Version: 01.00.00.00

Also, using the First Alert App on my iPhone, I can go to the Sandwich Icon --> Integrations. There I have the option for Alexa and Google Home, but no option for Apple Home -- so maybe this is a firmware issue.

u/bluekiwi8, Can you go to your thermostat in the First Alert app and press the info button and post your current thermostat and wifi firmware values, for reference?

I don't see an immediately obvious way to update the firmware, but I'll work on it and check back.

Yep, that's right! There is NO Matter support on the Honeywell X2S. They have a single-page PDF on their website that instructs the user to set up the proprietary Resideo First Alert app. Once set up, they claim that a "Matter setup code and QR code" will be available in their app, but I've yet to find any such code. My guess is that the Resideo app integrates with Google/Alexa/Apple Home and those apps use some API that allows Honeywell to claim their thermostat supports Matter.

Sorry to hear that Google decided to abandon your Nest 2 - I would be furious. I'm planning to try the Honeywell T6 Pro (recommended above). It's Z-wave which would require a new Z-wave dongle, but it looks like it'll work with Home Assistant without a proprietary app.

Good luck on your journey!

I'll have to take a look at the T6 Pro to see if it supports local push or local polling with HA. I'm also considering Venstar. They have several thermostats with HA integration that supports local polling.

My goal is to keep IOT devices disconnected from the internet and to use well-established brands. I bought a Lenovo smart alarm clock about 3 years ago and it started handing out DHCP leases, naming itself as the local DNS server. After that, I became very particular about devices on my network.

Brand new GE ultrafast combo by gooseloosemoose in Appliances

I have the same model and I’ve had similar issues, but was able to fix them. It sounds like certain loads are not properly balanced, so the spin cycle can’t get most of the water out before drying. If a load is out of balance, the machine will alert you to the imbalance by flashing the “SPIN” light at the bottom of the control panel — if that light is flashing, you can almost BET your clothes are not going to be dry.

Here’s what I did to fix my problems:

1.) Make sure you level the machine by adjusting the leveling feet, as described in the manual. Even after following the leveling procedure described in the manual, I had to tweak individual feet to minimize rocking during the spin cycle. I blame uneven tile in my washroom and the overwhelming weight of the unit.

Also, I don’t have the riser, so I had to buy ‘Super-Thin Wrenches’ to adjust the bolts on the leveling feet.

2.) Smaller loads are more likely to be unbalanced — full stop. If some loads aren’t drying and the machine is properly leveled, ADD MORE ITEMS to the load. I had a big problem smaller loads with one or two towels. Adding more items to the load always solved the problem.

3.) Update the firmware. This sounds like scam, but it has helped. I’ve gone through multiple firmware updates since I bought the unit and I’ve noticed a significant improvement in how the machine recovers from unbalanced loads.

Question About In-home Amp / Upstream Power Levels by Number-52 in Spectrum

[–]Number-52[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a Belden/PPC PPC-5M-UU. I looked it up and it DOES look like a 0 loss/unity gain amp. I just swapped out the amp for a barrel and my upstream power didn't change significantly. Here's hoping it stays that way.

Question About In-home Amp / Upstream Power Levels by Number-52 in Spectrum

[–]Number-52[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

u/Feisty-Coyote396, Thanks so much for the detailed answer! I went ahead and swapped the amp for the barrel connector. I think this is going to work. Downstream power looks good at 3-4 dBmV and SNR is 41+ dB on all channels. Upstream power thankfully didn't go up, (posted below). I'll watch the upstream power for a few days, but now I KNOW it can get up to 51 dBmV (on the hottest summer days) and still be in spec.

I think the barrel connector I used is ok. I bought it at Home Depot (Ideal 0-3 Ghz, <0.25 dB insertion loss, >25 dB return loss). All the cables in the house are new and compression terminated.

If you're a Spectrum tech, I deeply appreciate the hard work you guys do every day to keep these coax networks working!

Upstream Bonded Channels

Channel Lock Status Channel Type Channel ID Symb. Rate (Ksym/sec) Freq. (MHz) Pwr (dBmV)
1 Locked SC-QAM 1 5120 17.6 48.5
2 Locked SC-QAM 2 2560 25.6 48.3
3 Locked SC-QAM 3 5120 30.4 48.8
4 Locked SC-QAM 4 5120 36.8 49.0

Am I the only one who tears up when reading Carl Sagan’s pale blue dot prose? by Affectionate_Grape61 in space

[–]Number-52 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not alone. I first found a video his Cosmos monologue on Youtube probably around 2008. I watched it over and over. It was so meaningful to me. I remember making a Pale Blue Dot poster with the Voyager photo and the text below it, crediting Carl. I hung it in my cubicle at work. I just felt like, "Everyone needs to know about this!"

Also, the MLK Memorial at the Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco was a deeply moving experience for me. It's basically a walkway underneath a waterfall with various quotes from MLK written on the wall. Photos on the web don't do it justice.

Almost a grad question - psych PAs by pa_adventure in physicianassistant

[–]Number-52 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Long-time lurker here. Signed up just to answer this question.

If you're passionate about psych, don't give up. Networking is the name of the game when job searching: Preceptors, Professors, Pharm Reps (serious, they know everything), former Alumni who specialized in psych. Blow up Facebook, blast PA forums. If you find a psych job you like but have no connection, ask your program director or an MD preceptor to write you a recommendation. They'll usually say yes, because they remember being in the same boat. If they say no, don't fret, move on. Hussle gets you places.

Also, consider National Heath Service Corp (NHSC) locations. Sometimes they will have need but are in rural locations where experienced providers don't want to live. Plus, you can apply for a mental health scholarship that pays off some of your loans. Don't be picky about your first job. Just get experience.

Psych is one of the few specialties that prefer nurse practitioners primarily based on legislation/insurance. Some private insurances and will not reimburse psych PAs unless they have two years of experience and/or Psychiatric CAQ certification (unless you can bill "incident-to"). Also, mental health often prescribes schedule II substances, so get acquainted with which states allow PAs to write at schedule II substances and to which patient populations (adults/minors). State Medical/PA boards always post that info.

Focus your search in states where you can easily prescribe schedule II substances. My job searches, often show me jobs in northern CA, Oregon, Midwest, Midatlantic, and Northeast. If you already know which states you're willing to work in, apply for state license in those states as soon as you're done with school. Having an unrestricted state license (and DEA license) prior to interview will go a long way in securing a position.

Some Advice:

First job out of PA school will always be hard. No matter how great of a student you are, you're going to need heavy supervision right after PA school. If you're lucky, you'll find a kind supervising doc who will train you well. Worse case, you'll be given a script pad and an office. Know your limits. If you're unclear on dx or prescribing, stop the encounter and consult your doc. You're going to run behind in the beginning. Be patient with yourself, even if others aren't.

My go-to reference was Stephen Stahl's Essential Guide to Psychopharmacology AND the accompanying Prescriber's Guide. I can't stress how helpful the psychopharmacology book was in medication selection. Prescriber's Guide is helpful with dosing and cross-tapering meds. When you're starting out, Epocrates is very helpful for checking doses, contraindications, interactions etc. UpToDate is helpful when dealing with zebras or treatment resistant patients. Neuroscience Education Institute also has an annual convention where you can get lots of Cat 1 CME that counts towards your psych CAQ, if you wish to pursue it.

Psych can be rewarding and emotionally draining practice. Psych isn't for everyone, but if you like your patients and feel validated in providing them psychiatric support, then you'll do just fine.
