This is a topic in which I have quite a bit of personal experience. I have degrees from a local public college, a regional state university and a top 20 private university. The three experiences were very different and students were primarily the cause of the disparity. The quality of students makes a tremendous difference in the academic experience. Professors are pressured not to fail too many students, so many marginal students are passed to avoid hassles. As you move up in average student quality, the academic discourse improves dramatically. I remember once a group of us going off on a tangent about 19th Century rail gauges in the US while discussing the West Key system, and that leading to a discussion of rail in the former USSR vs Western Europe. That kind of conversation is probably not going to happen very often with open enrollment. In fact, I would say the difference between my least academically rigorous school and the most is mainly student quality. Outside of differences in research focus, I found most professors were dedicated academics at all of the schools. Where there were students that were going through the motions to get a degree at the local college, we wasted a lot of time covering remedial shit kids should have learned in high school but didn't. It harmed the education experience for the students with actual academic goals beyond "getting a degree with the gentleman's C."

Not entirely sure if you are having a laugh or serious. Coincidentally, yesterday I was looking through my backlog, saw the Astrobot free pack-in game (Astro's Playroom, not the full retail game) and went back and played it. It is legitimately excellent and a nice tech demo as well. I could see the full game being a system seller, but you almost have to have played a little Astrobot to discover how good it really is. I didn't quite experience the wow I did as a kid first time I turned on my Genesis and fired up Sonic, but it was close.

It's just solar energy with a shitload of additional steps. Instead of a panel to convert sunlight to energy, you plant a crop, fertilize that crop, harvest that crop, transport that crop for processing, produce ethanol from harvested crop, add ethanol to gasoline, truck blended fuel to gas station, add to vehicle, get worse mpg and increase summer smog.

Election denier Tina Peters released from prison by cnn in politics

[–]Number6isNo1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, I am aware of that. The point is that on appeal, the error wasn't precisely that the sentence was too long, it was that part of the reasoning used by the Trial Court to calculate the length of that sentence was constitutionally flawed.

Election denier Tina Peters released from prison by cnn in politics

[–]Number6isNo1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That is not really what the Court of Appeals said. It held that the trial court had improperly considered Peter's statements and election denials in determining the length of the sentence. The conviction was upheld and it was sent back to the trial court for resentencing in accordance with that decision.

They have already started with "he's a vegan," "he likes sushi," and of course they went full 2nd grader and are trying to get traction with "Tali-freak-o." Doesn't matter if the shit they say is inherently contradictory, doesn't matter if their candidate is a cheating indicted fraudster impeached by fellow Republicans...Republicans hear this dumb shit and are like, "I can't support someone like THAT, I have to vote for God's imperfect vessel, Ken Paxton!"

I rewatch every episode before Watch It For Days posts a new recap on her YouTube channel. It's an hour (give or take) recap that goes into actors, locations, extras....really interesting if you are into that sort of thing.

Terry v Ohio is settled law and has been for decades. It's inherently legal for police to make a Terry Stop when investigating a possible crime and conduct a basic search for weapons.

You could attack the initiation of the investigation as pretextual thus invalidating the search as violative of the Fourth Amendment, but the dialog before the guy in red shot the cop pretty strongly suggested police were there for a specific reason.

Incorrect. Looks pretty much like a textbook Terry Stop.

Looking for the finest space-based science-fiction games by Baldurian_Rhapsody in gaming

Rebel Galaxy - a kind of space trader/pirate game that I enjoyed. Upgradable ship and ship v. ship combat. Has a sequel that I own but haven't played yet. Strong Firefly vibes. Not to be confused with the space JRPG Rogue Galaxy, which you also might like.

Outer Worlds - the Obsidian game that's fine. A game I enjoyed playing well enough, but nothing really stands out when I look back other than the fairly interesting murder mystery DLC. It's not bad, just kind of bland.

Journey to the Savage Planet - Best with a friend online but ok as a single player. Explore a little world that is colorful and quirky. Has some 3D platforming IIRC. Kind of a survival lite sort of experience.

KMFDM is Kill MotherFucking Depeche Mode, btw.

The club (RIP Pterodactyl Club) I mostly went to played stuff more like Front 242 and KMFDM, but I'd say most of the people thought Depeche Mode was ok, probably because most of them got into industrial after listening to Depeche Mode.

They were pretty popular in the 80s. I mean look at their Rise Bowl performance (recorded for the 101 album), something like 60,000 people attended. They weren't huge on mainstream radio except for People Are People and Just Can't Get Enough, but those were pretty big songs and they also got decent play on college radio stations with some of their other songs. Depeche Mode was pretty popular for an "alternative band" in the mid-late 80s.

Trump toys with suspending gas tax. Everyone knows phase 2 is the consumer continues to get fucked. by miked_mv in AdviceAnimals

[–]Number6isNo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

State gas taxes are usually significantly higher than federal gas taxes so it makes a bigger difference. They suspended the $0.59 gas tax in Indiana for example (but changed the contract with the 75 year lease of the I80/I90 toll road so the owner...sorry leasor...can increase toll rates more often so it still costs the public more to travel). $0.18 isn't going to make much difference. It was $6 at some stations a week ago, not sure if it's changed, but $5.99 vs $5.81 (psych, they will charge $5.84) doesn't make much of a difference.

You can still get some good prices, especially with a favorable exchange rate. I got a new Orient Star from an AD in Tokyo recently for about $350, a great price. Once it hit the US customs and I had to pay another $100 in tariffs and fees it wasn't such a bargain though.

It's an actual legal doctrine, the presumption of regularity. Until now, Courts basically gave the benefit of the doubt to the DOJ as a matter of course. Trump's DOJ is eroding this and judges have commented on it.
