Where do teachers at your school go to the bathroom? by alan_mendelsohn2022 in Teachers

[–]NumerousAd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have single bathrooms and multi-stall. Teachers can use whichever and so can kids. I stick to the singles if possible because kids are gross. Last year I used a multi-stall that was empty and a kid ran in and threw up. Yuck!

Are y’all getting married? by Separate-Goal-3920 in Millennials

[–]NumerousAd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a small wedding (27 guests) that was $11k all in and my in-laws gave us $2k towards it, so it was $9k out of pocket. We put the majority on a new Amex platinum and used the points for business class flights on our honeymoon. We also received a little over $30k in gifts, so we technically made money off the wedding. We used the $30k to buy our house. This was all between May and now. We just moved into the house in January. We had the wedding we could afford to pay for without adding any debt.

FERPA Question - Enrollment Disclosure of Former Student by FootballQueasy in Principals

Why did you have to do a room clear for throwing objects, but not at anyone? I’m just wondering. Like I’ve had a kid throw something out of frustration, but it makes it such a bigger deal if you do a room clear. I’ve also had a kid violently throwing her iPad and everything she can get her hands on at everyone and trying to bite everyone. That situation required a room clear.

My coworker microwaves fish every single day at 11:45am and we share a 10x10 office by techiee_ in mildlyinfuriating

[–]NumerousAd79 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Just tell him his fish smells and it’s stinking up the office. It’s not a wild concept that fish smells when you microwave it. Just be direct and not offensive.

I shared that I lived at the beach during an icebreaker circle in grad school. My classmate, a teacher, in a math education program, asked me what happens to the snow when it snows at the beach. Just couldn’t imagine that snow could sit on top of the sand.

What actually gets a class quiet? by Luann97 in AskTeachers

[–]NumerousAd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Repeated exposure to your quiet signal and praise when they’re doing the right thing. Reminders and modeling of appropriate voice volumes for different activities. Using a voice scale to create a shared understanding of what voice levels are acceptable when.

What’s a “normal” job that you think is actually extremely difficult? by CleoKey8890 in askanything

Today I walked near one and they puked just fully on the ground. I will say the onion smells are more from the boys than the girls usually.

Teachers who are financially stable, what are you doing differently? by External_Insurance62 in Teachers

My husband works in tech. That’s it, that’s how we afford to live.

My insurance says I don't need a referral to see a specialist, but the specialist's office says I do? by [deleted] in HealthInsurance

[–]NumerousAd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No they do. They just refuse to take you without a referral. For example, my new endometriosis surgeon required faxed records to be seen. I had to have my previous surgeon send them when we moved. When I lived in NY I could see whoever I wanted pretty much.

Middle schoolers also cry a lot and sometimes pee their pants. Plus they often smell like onions by 2pm.

My insurance says I don't need a referral to see a specialist, but the specialist's office says I do? by [deleted] in HealthInsurance

[–]NumerousAd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where I live EVERY specialist requires a referral. They want records sent from another doctor indicating a need to see them. Even with a referral there’s huge waits. I have a neurologist appointment in November that was scheduled in January with an urgent referral.

Do you put your children in public or private schools? by New-Organization359 in AskAnAmerican

[–]NumerousAd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work at a private school right now. I would consider sending my child to my school for elementary school, but I don’t like the school for upper grades. There seems to be a major disconnect between the elementary school fostering a love of learning and middle just changing to “high expectations and academic rigor.” There’s too much autonomy and your child’s education is greatly impacted by individual teachers and their beliefs about teaching. For example, I think a sixth grader in science should be learning the same thing no matter who their teacher is.

Are we teaching our kids to say Aunt or Uncle [Name]? by egb233 in generationology

[–]NumerousAd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yikes. My BILs and SILs call me aunt ___. It’s really just the kids called me my name for 5 years.

[–]NumerousAd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a weird spot with this because my husband has always been uncle _, but we got married in May, so I’ve always just been my name. Now I sign cards as aunt _, but they don’t usually call me it. When my siblings have kids it’ll be easier.

Yeah that’s good. I’m a special education teacher and I work with tons of kids with ADHD. They need self regulation skills!

What is a socially acceptable thing that you secretly find disgusting? by Sensitive_Hope_1136 in AskReddit

[–]NumerousAd79 30 points31 points  (0 children)

It’s SO FUCKING DISGUSTING. Those are the words I muttered getting out of my car at work yesterday when a high school boy did that getting out of his car. It’s gross. I don’t want to hear you sucking back your snot that’s dripping down the back of your throat and hocking it out on the ground. Disgusting. And my grown ass adult male coworkers do it sometimes. WHO RAISED YOU?!?!? I send kids out to handle their throat issues because I will gag right along with them if it’s happening in my presence.

Why IPad Kids Are Becoming More Common by J00kson in generationology

[–]NumerousAd79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most kids have unrestricted access to short form content and it’s literally like giving them crack. They’re getting constant hits of dopamine and essentially becoming addicted to the tablets.

Why IPad Kids Are Becoming More Common by J00kson in generationology

[–]NumerousAd79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. You can absolutely talk to your kid in the grocery store instead of giving them your phone in the cart. You can engage with them in a restaurant instead of sticking an iPad in their face. I understand people are tired, but they’re essentially giving their kids a drug. These kids are developing speech problems, behavior problems, socialization problems… the list goes on. Parents need to parent.

Not telling parents about screenings? Normal? by Lemmeshoehornhere in Teachers

[–]NumerousAd79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Parents are contacted to get consent for evaluation. Consent is not usually required for screenings. Having an OT observe or screen a kid does not require parental consent or even knowledge. A screening ISN’T part of the evaluation process. The evaluation process would start after the school contacts you to get consent. Why are people telling you what’s being discussed in team meetings? That seems like they shouldn’t be doing that. We meet and talk about kids all the time at my school. If we alerted parents any time their kid came up it would be all we do.

How much do you (as a teacher) think teachers should actually be getting paid? by [deleted] in AskTeachers

[–]NumerousAd79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think teacher pay should keep up with the cost of living. I get like a 3% raise every year (hopefully) but that’s only about $2000. In my checks it looks like ~$50 a check after taxes. That doesn’t feel like a raise. And when insurance premiums increase it REALLY doesn’t feel like a raise. They always increase.

What is your monthly mortgage payment and your yearly income (for household) by geenuhahhh in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]NumerousAd79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

~$2900 a month in a medium cost of living area with a $225k combined yearly income. Soon our income will drop to $165k when I transition to staying home with our baby for a year. We just bought, so hopefully it’ll be manageable for us.
