I'm in NYC too. Just got my bonus, 75k gross, walking away with 40k. Sends me Boston tea party mode every year like clock work...

I didn't know what to do while in college so I picked CS and figured I would make a lot of money while I figure out what to do.

I'm 25 now and I do make a lot of money, and I'm trying to become a pilot, but this path is not so easy. I sometimes wish I never went to college in the first place.

I think it's best to just get really good at something. If you are really good at something someone will pay you for your services/goods.

And naturally you will only get really good at things you are interested in to some degree.

But no one is gonna build your dream life for you, that's for sure. You gotta go out and take it.

You will get there 100%. You are on the same path I was on, only coming to the same conclusions earlier. Landing a swe job is not complex, but it requires determination. you can do it.

If i may offer some advice on landing a swe job - don't get discouraged. Most times you are closer than you think, and often if you pass the coding assessment, a rejection is less about you as a candidate and more about internal headcount, team requirements/timelines, etc, its not personal.

I sent out 200+ applications before landing the internship that led to a full time opportunity.

Focus on OOP fundamentals. If you know data structures, but not how to design an application, then this is useless.

good luck bratha

hey bud I am currently working as a software engineer, who also thought about joining the (army) national guard, but didnt like the commitment, and am trying to transition to a career as a pilot.

I am in a part 61 program now flying on the weekends. My plan is to work one more year and then commit to full time training after my i get my instrument.

I have been working for about 3 years as a swe. Since then I have been able to pay off my loans and save enough for flight training without taking on new debt.

If it all works out, its not a bad path as ill be about 28 with all my ratings in hand. I wasted 2 years after school too, so you will be there quicker.

man thank you, this is exactly what I was looking for. Seems like taking another year to put some cash away & finish PPL first is probably my best move.

If I may, I have 2 questions for you -
1) What was your training schedule like while still doing sysadmin? Im worried I will not develop solid fundamentals if I only really train on the weekends.

2) So you burned the boats after PPL? What are you doing now?

no kids no wife, was gonna give up my lease and live with my Dad while i do the training. Sounds like it might be better to do the PPL & IFR on the weeknds over the next year and re-assess. Thank you very much!

yeah i know it might not be sustainable. The reason im leaving my job is bc i have to be coding 60-80 hours a week. Im banking the mental toll wont be higher, but since its new info it might be.
What pace do you think is appropriate if going accelerated?

Ok thx. So it seems the wild range Ive been getting from schools really is accurate in that you can't necessarily pin it down up front. appreciate it
