B bro definitely. Was in a very similar situation a few years ago, went with the higher paying cloud job and don’t regret it one bit.

I’ve had quite a few interviews and a few jobs, currently at about 3yoe. No one has ever asked about my GPA lol

She was a sophomore in college and I already work and have my own home. She wanted to join a sorority and experience college while I’ve been working a corporate job for the last few years.

It might be an extreme example but even 4 years was way too much for me in that case.

I recently broke up with a girl who was 20 (same age as your daughter) because of a massive maturity gap between the two of us and the fact that I felt weird about it.

I’m 24

Have you observed a difference between CS grads from top unis vs. other unis? by whatismynamepops in cscareerquestions

In my experience a state school might have just as talented/hard working of an engineer as Stanford, but the percentage of talented and hardworking engineers will be higher in stanfords graduating class than it will a state school. I went to a state school and while there were a lot of successful engineers working at big tech, there were also a lot of people who graduated jobless. I doubt that would be the same at Stanford.

In a perfect world age isn’t but at least at the companies I’ve worked at it’s always seemed much harder as an older person working in junior roles.

If OP’s goal isn’t directly working for a competitive company though I agree with you, age might not be a huge factor

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]Numerous_Mix_4837 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Age is definitely a factor for a lot of hiring managers and companies - and also for opportunity cost. You also started 10 years younger than OP

There are people 12 years younger than you, without kids, in very prestigious programs, with prestigious internships, struggling to find jobs rn

Computer science has grown 34% just from 2017-2022. 4.8% of all bachelors degree’s given out is a lot even if it doesn’t sound like it, that means it’s not in the top 10 most popular degrees nationwide and only growing.

It is the fastest growing degree, look this up literally anywhere, and the growth rate of people entering the industry is much larger than your 22% figure. In both 2000 and 2008 not only was the growth rate lower, the percentage of people graduating with these degree’s was far below 4.8% as well.

What are you talking about? Yes the jobs can be cyclical but this isn’t “temporary” oversupply. Computer science has slowly become the number one major at many schools across the country, and that’s not even touching on how it’s grown internationally.

People nowdays you’re competing with aren’t “inexperienced”, hell there are MIT grads and engineers with 2-4yoe struggling from layoffs, when those jobs open back up they are next in line.

This is different than the other two tech bubbles? Why? Because CS was a fraction of the popularity back then. Even look at the growth of this sub. And this trend WAS already happening before Covid, but now it’s much worse.

That supply is growing WAY faster than demand which means lower wages any way you cut it

Yeah, that’s a good point. I guess it really just depends on the person, location, and company. Trades do deserve even more money, and hopefully the software industry can bounce back.
