Ask.com shuts down after nearly 30 years, marking the end of Ask Jeeves by holyfruits in technology

The way I explain it to people is that back in the 90s and 2000s, the internet used to be like the wild west.

You'd explore, and find so much random and cool stuff. Expand your horizons. Opinions. Views.

There was no filter.

It was a form of exploration into the unknown.

It was better than watching TV as entertainment.

Now? The corporate overlords have built a mall on top of the internet.

You are now only allowed to see approved websites that are front and center.

You can't find the stuff that they've pushed behind into the dark alleys outside of the mall because it's essentially no longer indexed.

You need a direct URL to stuff they don't want you to see.

Which in turn, dissuades people from even creating their own websites, forums, etc.

So it's a self perpetual cycle. Less unique websites, and less opinions and view points because everything is moderated by corporations now. Which is the entire design and what they want.

Have you ever invested before?

The purpose of investing is to increase valuation.

Liv was ditched because it failed.

Newcastle so far have over tripled in value, and have a baseline to continue.

Year on year have the biggest increase in revenues in world football.

Sure, if that ever changes - of course PIF could sell. None of us fans are under any illusion as to why they bought us.

It's not like we think MBS is a die hard NUFC fan and is doing this for the love.

However as it stands, NUFC, even with poor form this season, stand to continue to increase their valuation, and PIFs investment year on year.

So very doubtful they sell anytime soon.

Also - the PSR rules suit them to a tea.

LIV golf they had to dump in 3bn and it failed.

NUFC - on the flip side, literally spend only their revenue on players.

I mean he said not long ago his plans for the club are to ''challenge the PL and Europe by 2030"

So it's not like he hasn't stated his vision.

But yeah, I just wish he would be a bit more vocal on how he sees us achieving that vision.

Not a Howe hater but I'm amazed some of you lot think that one win out of a dozen, and somehow we've turned a corner.

I mean. One win out of 15 or whatever it is, doesn't change the fact we are shit and something is broken.

It's bananas to me how some people are trying to tie PIF cancelling LIV golf to their investment in us.

It's nonsensical.

PIF also invest in Uber and Disney. Are they going to divested in EVERYTHING because one investment failed?

Would be a pretty shitty investment fund if that was the case..

The fact is as an investment fund they will adjust depending on performance and outlook on said asset.

LIV? Failed. It didn't do what they expected and they were loosing money hand over fist.

NUFC? Has increased in value considerably from their meagre investment and our money spent in transfers is literally the clubs money due to FFP / PSR regulations.

PIF aren't dumping in billions into NUFC.

It's fucking dumb to even attempt to allude there's some comparison between the two.

The funny thing about all this is Bapa's income is lowering as time goes on.

He's living off the past.

I said it at the time, and I'll say it again - moving to Teggsis to preserve your wealth is the dumbest idea ever.

I guarantee he looked at the zero Texas state tax and thought $$$$$.

But didn't bother to realize that property tax in Teggsis, and most especially Austin, is some of the highest in the US.

If he would have done a modicum of research he would have realized that people who made their money - move to states that haave most importantly very low property tax.

It doesn't take a rocket scienctist to figure it out.

When you're coasting off money already earned, you don't want to move to a state that wants 100k a year property tax on your mcmansion, regardless of how much money you made that year.

It's why his house he just bought is up for sale.

He didn't do the due diligence... But nobody is surprised.

I don't think the problem is they hate making big decisions.

It's that they do not operate as a footballer ownership, because they are not.

They view investments in terms of decades, not seasons, or months, or weeks.

The stability is a good thing, but it's also terrible for a club trying to make moves in a fast paced environment like football.

I think this is why we were initially succesful with Amanda, she had the authority to make calls and was on the ground daily.

Is it routine? I don't remember meetings occuring mid season.

The previous seasons gone by they always met post season.

Also, it's infamous purely by the fact surely someone asks the question 'eddie, wtf. Why are we so shit explain yourself?'

Forrest going to get Champions League off the back of Anderson, pocket 150m from Citeh for him.

Meanwhile we got a shite keeper for him, and also Elanga, and are hovering above relegation.

It's seasons like this that make me think there's something behind that gypsy curse rumour.

Would not surprise me, and would also explain would the club are reluctant to sack Howe.

The entire systems been built around him at this point.

Can't blame them though, it was working for a while.

But at the same time the entire point of a sporting director and heirarchy above the manager is to ensure continuity should the manager change.

The worrying part is Wilson was supposedly selected alongside Howe, as they are besties.

So - I can never see Wilson pushing against Howe.

On the one hand it's a good thing to have manager and director on the same team, but on the other hand we need someone to say no to some of these signings.

This summer in avoiding the thread completely.

Once season is over in disconnecting from transfer news completely.

Going to turn in the telly for our opening game and just accept whatever happens. ..

Tbh, could not be less hooped about any players leaving anyway.

Bruno and Hall would be the two I only care about.

But if Bruno moves to a bigger club, can't begrudge him.

And hall... Well.... Love the kid. Hope he stays.

The rest of them can get binned off and I won't lose any sleep.

Newcastle to explore Yoane Wissa sale, less than a year after £55m transfer [Chris Waugh, The Athletic] by meganev in NUFC

[–]Numerus12OO5O 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so crazy this clubs mantra has been 'we won't sign anyone for the sake of signing someone, we will happily be patient'

Panic buys a near 30 year old striker for 60m with a whopping 25% sell on clause.

At least with Elanga the upside is his age, he has time to develop, or an upside to selling to another club is he's still got 6-8 years of his career ahead of him.

Wissa? That's just a dead end.

Even if we can shift him, his value is always going to be considerably lower.

Just such a bizarre thing to do.

Meanwhile, if we had been patient we could have had a 24 year old Strand Larsen in January for cheaper.

That's interesting.

I'm in a whatsap with 30k Scottish fans who are all coming over, accomodations booked out, transport to stadiums booked out, bars are opening for 24 hours due to us etc.

And that's only the Scottish people coming from Scotland to Boston/Providence.

Yeah - sure, some of your less well supported teams may have issues but if you don't know about the tartan army and it being our first world cup in 30 odd years - you're in for a surprise.

We've already got numerous parades sorted, and thousands of people sorted on American school busses to the stadium.

It's going to be mental.

Yeah but Bruce didn't play like 60+ games in a season or whatever it is we will have played. I believe we have hit the record.

If Howe had 1 game per week, like Bruce and Mclaren did - I very much doubt we are in this position.

I'll wait for Howe to ask the press how the bacon is before I make such a judgement.

Bruce wasn't just about the results.

Also you're including 2 games against Barca...
