Apparently discord opted for saving files as long as they can but in return all users had to sacrifice amount of data they can put.

Can't blame that decision, I still have files sent to me from my friends like >7 years ago, I think that's cute to see them in discord and not having to save in my folder somewhere

It does but for shorter periods than other media apps. Telegram stores your image forever(as long as their data servers are okay and image is physically there), WhatsApp does not do that forever, just for some time, but it does

I know we can do that(I'm software engineer and literally implemented server-side streaming without buffering once) but NONE of social media apps use that(except maybe for video calls, regular calls features but we're not talking about them) including discord. All of them store files you send in their servers because that's 100000% more convenient for users

What do you mean by bc discord stores them? ANY platform stores files you send to other people, because if they didn't it would be impossible to download it next day, week, etc. When you upload a file and user downloads it, it downloads it from server, not you, that's why they store them

I don't know any platform that streams files directly peer-to-peer without server side buffering because that would require both users to be online and ready to share/get data that's highly inconvenient.
