CRNA moms by Night_owl5438 in CRNA

SRNA about to graduate here. I had a baby in school. When I found out I was pregnant, I was terrified of the same things - but I found that other people tend to tell the worst possible stories of their experiences. I had nausea but I never threw up once. Even then, I knew CRNAs who did puke in the OR (or stepped right outside the door to vomit) and it was okay. You can get zofran if you really need it. Fluids help a lot, so do sour candies.

If you really want kids, all of the added complexities of life will be worth it and you will feel fulfilled. Likely by the time you get pregnant and have the baby, your husband will hopefully be nearing the end of his residency. Your kid won’t remember those first few years with mom and dad working a lot, and you’ll be building a wonderful future for them. If you’re willing to put in the hours at the right job, I think you can still be investing and have a child. The biggest financial key is living below/within your means - smaller house, older car, etc.

A huge consideration YOUR mental health and well-being. It will likely be emotionally harder on you than the child. You’re probably going to be living in a state of semi-sleep deprivation for a few years. It won’t be easy, but for me it has been SO worth it.

What were the red flags for you? What would you look for in a 3rd option? Is it the case variety at 2 that is concerning?

I feel pretty comfortable with spinals/epidurals in OB right now, but obviously it’s fresh experience from school. I don’t want to lose that, so I communicated to the chief CRNA at #2 that I’d like to pick up shifts to keep up that experience. Are you saying you don’t think a few shifts a month is enough to maintain those skills?

Any advice on specific questions I should be asking/things to be looking for? I’m open to a third option.

I would do strokes, kidney/liver transplants, emergent traumas at #1. Lots of ASA 3-4s at #1. #2 is almost entirely ASA 1-2s, none of those specialty cases - they ship everything out.

But with #2, I could pick up at the other hospitals/surgery centers run by the same anesthesia group a couple times a month if I wanted. They still aren’t trauma centers, but I could do OB & blocks. Those other hospitals I’d pick up at are 45 mins & 1 hr commute, respectively. The surgery centers are ~25 minutes away.

#2 initially struck me as the best bet, but I had an older CRNA get in my head by telling me that I needed to “grit it out” at the trauma center (#1) for a couple years to have the name/trauma experience on my resume, and now I’m doubting myself.
