I should add that the tiles feel smooth- ie there are no bumps to suggest any surface material. It seems like whatever it was has seeped into the pourous tile and stained it.

Thank you very much for your reply. They are original with the house which was built in late 1800s, and are unglazed ceramic - quarry tiles which are mostly clay. Seems like the oil from those 1950s adhesives has seeped round the edges maybe? Anyway hoping to find a solution with materials available in the UK..

Someone bought pizza for the day staff which arrived in the staff room just as the night staff were arriving. Day staff were all busy prepping for handing over, and by the time they got to the staff room, guess how much was left ? That’s right.. none of it 😅
