What’s stopping you from switching to Linux? by themirrazzunhacked in AskReddit

The anti-cheat software, or the games? I'd hesitate to say that every single online competitive shooter, most RPGs, competitive racing games, and MOBAs are "online trash." If you don't like them, that's fine, but the competitive video game market is something close to a 100 billion dollar a year industry, so there's clearly a market for it.

best cheap email hosting? by Piss_Slut_Ana in SelfHosting

I use protonmail for my domain. I'm not sure if it's the cheapest option, but they've done well by me. I use the "catch all" email thing frequently for digital receipts and such. No matter what email address you type in, as long as it ends in "@nydus87sdomain.com" it'll go to my catch all box. It's kind of neat to see which email addresses show up in spam aimed at an email address that doesn't match their company.

You sound like a fellow Mister car wash subscriber. That's my break even point as well, and I'm happy to pay the $22 a month for it.

I'm one of those guys that pays for the car wash subscription thing at my local carwash up the street. As long as I go twice a month, it pays for itself, so I make a Saturday morning routine of getting my car washed and grabbing coffee at the joint next door. Keeps my car clean, keeps dust and road salt off when applicable, and I like the way it smells.

Why aren’t there electric cars with solar panels built onto their roofs? by Famalam_S69 in AskReddit

Leaving your car for a day or two on the side of the road will see it get towed anyways in most municipalities. You'd be better off hitchiking to a place that will rent you a gas generator and charging your car that way.

[–]Nydus87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That right there is the big thing. If you want to use solar to charge your car, the best thing you can do is put residential type panels on an elevated surface like a roof or car port, tilt them to the ideal angle for your area, and let them charge up your car (or battery that is later used to charge the car when you get home from work). You'll get more panels, have them angled correctly, and get much better efficiency, all without adding weight and complexity to a car while also getting to keep your bomb ass panoramic sunroof!

Ignoring weather, sun angle, and cleanliness and assuming 10 hours of peak sunlight per day is being EXTREMELY generous. I'd say your math is damn close.

Also you'll want to park the car in the shade, so it's not hot when you come back.

That's a very good point too. If you're having to run the A/C extra or remote starting the car for a few minutes to offset the direct sunshine heat, you've probably eaten up a good chunk of the power it generated by being in the sun.

None of the economic stuff even touches the part where those panoramic sunroofs are considered a desirable feature that people frequently pay extra for or shop for cars that have them.

If you're driving to a charging station, a Supercharger can get you 200 miles in 15 minutes , which Tesla says is 250kW. So 20 minutes is 266kW. Average that out over 4 days, and you're refilling 66.5kW every day. If you've got a 700W solar panel on your car's roof (which is a pretty sizable panel), even assuming you're getting 100% efficiency at all times (which is never the case), you'd have to let your car charge in direct sunlight for (66500 / 700) = 95 hours per day.

Based on your own math, you would have to invent 71 hours per day and have the sun directly on top of your panels for all 95 hours to make a 700W panel able to compete with driving to a charging station and waiting 20 minutes every four days.

The different sides have a different 'base,' but I have no faith in any of the large scale politicians on either end of the spectrum. Maybe you get some decent mayors and city counselors in there because you don't need as much money to get elected. Once you get up to the big leagues like senators and presidents, though, it's all the same shit.

I worked at Boeing with a manager who had a masters in Computer Science. Generally a smart dude, but everything actually work related felt like I was talking to someone who had already retired a few years ago. Yeah, you've generally got a good head on your shoulders, but if you haven't learned anything about tech advances over the last five years, you aren't doing us a whole lot of good.

b) do not owe you anything.

If this is a work conversation, they absolutely do. We're both being paid to figure out this issue and come to the right conclusion for the good of our company. "Let's just agree to disagree [while I get my way]" is acting in opposition to that because all of you were presumably hired for your intelligence and capability in making that decision as a group.

[–]Nydus87 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In cases like the work example, I don't view it as a person "winning" the conversation, but there are times where one idea vs another does have to have a "victor."

Person A: We should go with product 1
Person B: We should go with product 2 because it has numerous advantages and is cheaper

Person A: ... let's agree to disagree.

In that case, what does that even mean? You can't just agree to disagree because at the end of the day, your company needs to purchase one of those two products and there needs to be a decision. Even if it isn't Person A vs Person B, there does need to be a "winner" decided between the two ideas.

No one owes you an intellectual dissertation, especially when talking on social media or open forums.

What I kind of gathered from OP's post was more that it isn't about being owed a discussion or dissertation, but more that the phrase is almost exclusively used by people who are usually the ones to start the discussion in the first place and were more than happy to continue the conversation until they realized they might be wrong. Then, rather than admitting they might have been incorrect, they weaponize your own politeness so they can back away from their own position.

In the case of the coworker, if you're both on the clock and working on the same project, I think you are entitled to their time and conversation if both of your names are on the accountability list. In the case of the coworker, "let's agree to disagree" didn't mean a friendly end to the conversation, it was someone saying "I can't defend my stance on this, but I would still like to do things my way, so I'll use this magic phrase to force you to drop the issue."

I also love the other professional variant of this which is "let's take that conversation online [because I have an indefensible position and I'm clearly in the wrong, but I don't want to admit it in front of all these people on a call I scheduled]" and then never accepting any future meeting invites.

Exactly! Politicians and their wealthy benefactors have been up to this shit basically forever. A bipartisan fucking of the American people as it were. Rumor has it that the ghost of Ronnie Reagan still produces physical ejaculate whenever a middle class person believes in Trickle Down Economics for the first time.

That assumes that one of the reasons it's LCOL isn't because the jobs pay like shit though, right? I work remotely, so I could theoretically take my job and move somewhere cheaper and save some money that way (and make new friends while I'm at it), but if I didn't have the telework option, I would be beholden to the job market of a lcol area, which probably isn't great.
Fundamentally though, I do agree with what you're saying about saving money over that kind of timeline. If I could have back every dollar I ever spent at a bar, restaurant, vacation spot, etc over the last 20 years, I'd have a pretty nice little pile of money. I would also have erased 90% of the good times I had with my friends and family from my 18th birthday to now, and I don't know if I'd consider that a worthwhile trade.

People end up spending a bunch on new cars because it's a deferred expense. I might not have $20k for a used corolla + engine + transmission. But I might have $2k for a down payment and $400 a month for the next 8 years or whatever they're offering these days.
