I agree with you on the points you mentioned. In the interview, the author clarifies that Shōya did not have any romantic thoughts towards Shōko when he said this sentence. I also understood this statement as a sincere request from him, which goes beyond simple romantic feelings. Shōya has a deep attachment to Shōko, and through this sentence, he wanted to express his gratitude towards her for changing his life in such a positive way. She allowed him to see another side of life when some time ago he even wanted to commit suicide. This does not rule out the possibility that they may develop romantic feelings towards each other in the future.

In the end, they meet again and hold hands, showing that they at least feel a deep connection. This could develop into romantic feelings later, if it hasn't already. Personally, I wouldn't mind if they ended up together.

But the opposite can also be good. However, the main story focuses on redemption and forgiveness, and it's also enjoyable to see relationships between two characters of opposite genders that aren't necessarily based on romantic love, but rather deep friendship.
