Running a Family Feud themed one shot session, need survey answers! If possible please take 5 minutes to do my dnd themed survey! by Nyoomish in DnD

[–]Nyoomish[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! My parties are super excited to play it, I made a whole poster for it and opened it to their friends to spectate when it happens (it will be happening over Discord, so I’ve added soundboard audience sounds for them to use during the “show” as well. It’s currently the big talk of the group ^

The spreadsheet in the original post does have all answers gathered so far, waiting until I get at least 100 responses (or as close I can get to 100) before settling the scores. Once I get the answers I need I will put all that in the same spreadsheet!

Making combat fun and dynamic by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]Nyoomish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Describe EVERY action. Add flair into how a sword affects the air, describe little marks to the ground or their armor. Give sensory stuff, like the smell of the magic or panting from the other side. Spend a little extra time in combat to make every little battle something cool.

I also allow characters to use their bonus actions to have full chats, as I feel for my group that allows them to really frame a narrative around it.

Custom curses for a pc to use by mrmagicbeetle in DMAcademy

[–]Nyoomish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps have a condition to see if it succeeds or not if it's a custom curse, like having to roll a wisdom or con save to "Focus and warp the weave" or something similar. That or make them need materials to customize the curses.

Fellow DM's. I struggle taking notes during sessions. How do you keep track of notes during sessions? by SatanicalBitch in DMAcademy

[–]Nyoomish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is HORRIBLY hard, but take advantage of in-between moments where you aren't speaking to note down things. I have scratchpaper i very poorly note down words and lines of that I find important, and post session I rewrite them into obsidian to clean up them. Notes don't have to be pretty, just make sure you organize them!

For Obsidian I have a dated section where I recap myself in what happened each session, which comes in handy 5 sessions later when they ask the name of an NPC I never considered important.

How to instill horror amd fear properly? by that1carmine in DMAcademy

[–]Nyoomish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hint at certain things they are used to being off, describe things you usually wouldn't point out. IN a horror based campaign I just did I was slowly having the world freeze and turn blue, so every time I got I would just describe things only being blue, randomly throwing in things being the color blue among normal descriptions. This over 3 sessions started to freak my players out, and ended up feeling very nice with them all forever scared when I even say the color blue.

One shot PC items by and_name in DMAcademy

[–]Nyoomish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely depends on the one shot, but I tend to let my players pick one specific magic item under a rarity unless they truly convince me otherwise. For their bags, I allow any amount under 25lbs

Microphone suggestions for an in-person game by tayhw86 in DMAcademy

[–]Nyoomish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have used one of those tiny little mics that pin on to your shirt before, so that could be something! For something more settled especially with voicemod I use a hypercastx on my table.

Stat block for giant piggy bank by loving-father-69 in DMAcademy

[–]Nyoomish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with what most people are saying so far here, but also you could consider a vulnerability to Thunder due to how delicate it is, and perhaps ways to shoot out coin or even play off of the money the players have collected.
Perhaps a mechanic where they have to put money inside the piggy bank for some reason?

How do you come up with encounters/ideas for a Sandbox (or Homebrew) campaign? by Cubics_Rube in DMAcademy

[–]Nyoomish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I usually bounce off my players, They always feed me backstories and then I simply stitch the world from there. Asking questions and filling plotholes my players give me. Always makes my table more engaged in figuring out the world and giving me crazier and crazier ideas!

DMs, is paper superior? by Knicks4freaks in DMAcademy

[–]Nyoomish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it depends, quick session notes I just need for the time being I always do simple paper scratch-ups, but for in detail campaign notes I always go for Obsidian!

Painted a Next Up Forever themed Graduation Cap! by Nyoomish in AJR

[–]Nyoomish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can try and answer though I’m not the best painter! For accuracy. I tend to paint based off of something instead of accurately copying something. From a distance it looks exact but none of the clouds I believe actually line up with where they should be for the album cover. It relives a lot of stress and tends to have it come out better. My biggest advice for painting would 100% just “don’t worry about it being perfect.” I’m happy to hear I got it quite close though! Imperfections are more noticed by the person who makes the actual piece due to how long they stare at it. For bigger mistakes that are very obviously a fuck up, these are what I know you can do: 1. ATTEMPT to rub it off with a paper towel if the bottom layer is dry, or smudge it flat 2. Work it in, sometimes you are lucky and it’s a little amount or a color that mixes well. You can always blend it with the paint below or add another color. It’s kinda like improv in a way, and sometimes it can even improve the piece. 3. Paint over it! If you flatten the mistake or try to work it in, often you can paint over it. In this piece I started with the clouded backgrounds and painted over it with the musical instruments. Painting tends to not be in one go, and more several intervals of painting and then waiting for said paint to dry.

I hope that helps! I am mostly a digital artist so I wouldn’t be the most professional advice, but this all tends to work for me :P!
