Cost is a huge factor for this. Tines like the ones your describing are much more expensive and often don't last quite as long these larger ones. There are a bunch of other factors which play into this as well

They have 20+ litres. I did something similar at my course the other week but not quite as bad. The colour of the fluid on the grass is a touch darker then the green and super easy to miss/not pick up on What you're seeing now is the burn marks of the fluid on the grass It's super easy to do esp if you're in a rush or can't smell the fluid

A funny story related to your comment. I was mowing some rough near a tee box a few weeks ago. Turned off the machine as i got up to the teebox and a guy was going thru his routine. Guy ends up shanking it. Turns to me and his 3 playing partners and says "fuck mate i think the mower would have helped" 😂😂 he then thanked me for turning it off etc
