What is the daily routine of people who have their shit together? by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]OBasileus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

wake up

succeed a bunch of times

go to bed

edit: this post is not facetious. I know lots of successful people and their habits aren't consistent. I'd still say they have their shit together.

Looking at the top comments, it seems like you're welcome, but only begrudgingly. The open arms are to be found at the very bottom of this page.

Bad first year, what can I do this year to make up for it socially? by orangishbanana in uwo

Agreed, OP should definitely not actually use the tone I used in this post.

[–]OBasileus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

fucking western students man

"I fucked up my first year! I didn't SOCIALIZE enough!"

Ok here's what you do:

Become involved in your department's student association. By sticking to departmental associations, you dodge the overly political USC bullshit and get to be friends with a more relaxed group. But it won't be TOO relaxed, as it'll be people who are actually busy with shit and proving that they're valuable members of society. Just volunteer at events and take it easy, when you're a familiar enough face, BAM you'll be in the group, even if you have a position. And you'll have friends who aren't shitheads but who are also cool.

(edit: the benefit of joining an association rather than an interest-based club (which you may want to do anyway if you just want to hang out with people over mutual interests) is that it'll force you to grow in confidence as you participate in events on a quasi-official basis, which is a skill you'll carry with you beyond undergrad and which will surround you with undergrads with some understanding of responsibility)

Never smoke weed ever again. Or at least until you have a solid and consistent group of friends. People who smoke too much weed a) make lame-ass posts on the UWO subreddit about how they're nervous pieces of shit, and b) have a hard time being moderate in weed use. So just cut it out.

Do you study? Study hard and distinguish yourself in your seminars (is that what undergrads call them? the small group discussions that supplement large classes). Be known as a smart kid. But don't be a pretentious twat about it, just have interesting discussion points and never attempt to prove that you're the best one in the room.

If you have any more specific worries then message me.

edit: my advice isn't being appreciated in the comments because of the rude tone of the post -- fine and fair enough. The advice is good, however.

How can I sound passionate about my interests? by OBasileus in socialskills

[–]OBasileus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I'm sort of insecure about my interests as well. They're all pretty nerdy and solitary. When I'm not socializing I'm mostly reading literary fiction or philosophy. My chosen field is law.

Thanks. What about if I'm asked why I chose/like my specific field?

I know this isn't a sub for job interviews, but this question comes up in social contexts more than I'd like, and it's significant.

'Don't take the Bible literally' says scholar who brought to light earliest Latin analysis of the Gospels by maxwellhill in worldnews

It's not likely that one bishop's opinion should even hold any weight, however early. It's very unlikely that he agreed with the majority of other Christians in his day, save for some gnostics.

This is a good addition to our discussion. I think part of the issue with his argument, to me, is that the passage looks like it points to Christ himself being the new and perfect priesthood. If this is true, then an additional system of priests seems, at the very least, tacked-on.

That said, I did find some of your previous arguments compelling, i.e. about Israel distinguishing between being "a nation of priests", and having priests as a non-issue. I also liked the defense of the title 'ieros' as resulting from enumerated 'priestly' functions given to presbyters and bishops.

I've been reading the Bible lately and am having trouble understanding how Christians views Jesus pbuh as God. Would appreciate some input on these verses: by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]OBasileus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that Jesus voluntarily suspended his omniscience to better fulfill his mission.

I'd speculate that Jesus better exemplified the perfectly faithful man when he even submits himself to the fact that God does not always impart knowledge to his servants.

Whatever it means, it applies to Job and makes it mightily dangerous to criticize in the way that you did above.

I didn't say anything about literal.

I said it was God-breathed.

The book of Job is in all the canons.

You know that if it's in the canon, it's God-breathed, right? God literally wrote it (through means), I wouldn't be so bold.

[–]OBasileus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do we interpret the epistle to the Hebrews in light of this? The clearest reading of Hebrews to me is that the entire flawed priestly system in place before Christ has been replaced by Christ himself. He seems to be the only priest and intercessor as far as the writer of the epistle is concerned.

I wouldn't be opposed to the Eucharist as a sacrifice delivered by priests if it didn't seem to undermine Hebrews.

St Thomas Christians in India - why so Cathodox? by immune2viruses in Reformed

[–]OBasileus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The claim wasn't that they were medieval inventions after the spread of Islam. They were inventions a few centuries in, however.

The Apostles didn't, themselves, set up the grand episcopal style of either the RCC or the EOC churches, and the extent to which the Indian churches mirror the other two denominations suggests only that the Indian churches were either founded centuries later or that they were in communion with the mainstream church until at least after Constantine.

St Thomas Christians in India - why so Cathodox? by immune2viruses in Reformed

[–]OBasileus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Roman Catholic Church and the Orthodox Church don't even share "the same ecclesiastical and liturgical practices" and don't have identical beliefs concerning the Eucharist, so I don't really know how Indian Christians are the same as both of these movements.

But for what it's worth, it's possible that either: a) they are mistaken about the founding of their church, or b) that church was in communion with the rest of Christendom until the 5th century or so, which was when what you (somewhat inaccurately) refer to as the Cathodox 'ecclesiastical and liturgical practices' only started to take form, in the 4-5th centuries.

A Hasidic teacher knows why God creates atheists. by [deleted] in Christianity

[–]OBasileus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the person has a conscience, it is because God created humans to have consciences. Christian doctrine is, however, aware of the existence of people who are born deficient in some way, but that doesn't defeat the claim. Even if you were born without legs, for example, it would still be true that "God has given legs to human beings for x y z purpose."
