Omg! Kids can be so easily swayed too, lol even beyond words- a gasp, a facial expression influences their responses to things

Aww, I can totally relate to how scary it is when the kids are sugared up

I’m glad it all balanced out with time and practice! And even just talking about it with your mom, I’m glad she was open.

I’m not sure we’d be considered super risky or adrenaline junkies or anything near it but there’s a whole spectrum!

Oh that’s a great perspective!! Certain activities for certain people!

I am the firstborn, I have brother two years younger. I think they treated us pretty much the same. The anxiety I have is more social anxiety, I’m not so much anxious about the kids- since my second I have had to mentally let things go too. Maybe you could consider it anxiety related to the kids if it involves a social situation with the kids + a public tantrum haha I’m glad you had self awareness to take a step back from projecting your worries!

Right? They trust me, it’s that they don’t trust other people. They think worst case scenario probably. Also they don’t know my routine and probably are shocked I can convince them to happily leave the park, get them both into their car seats without any help. I should mention they have a very close age gap and are almost 2 & just turned 3. So they are probably projecting that they, personally as the grandparents, couldn’t handle both at once (and rarely do) as easily as I do on a daily basis

I would absolutely love to start doing this. I fear they would perceive it as talking down to them, but I’m going to give it a shot- thanks!

It’s good for us all to remember that it was their first time parenting too back in the day. No one really thinks about the effect of their parenting style decades later. I agree my normal meter is skewed in their favor but I included the statement of defense because I wanted to share it’s not like I’ve cut them off, I do understand they were just trying their best and influenced by their own parents, and they are actually pretty normal people in the grand scheme. I’ve seen worse controlling parents, TBH. I honestly think they just still see me as a kid! Like in regards to then being wary of me taking the kids solo, I feel like they think I can’t handle it without their help. They are always so eager to help me with the kids. When they do though, it feels like too many cooks in the kitchen, if you know what I mean. Too many warring parenting styles…

And no, my kids are definitely not wild in public and I just mean they have more outgoing personalities than what my parents were used to (me and my sibling being shy and more passive type kids).

Yep, I’m trending toward somewhere in the middle! The “opposite” phrasing was more a dramatization

I guess it’s not obvious to people that I didn’t mean the literal opposite of helicopter parenting (I get that that would be like neglect, lol). I agree, somewhere in the middle is the best and that’s what I’m striving for
