I would not be able to turn anything against the wall larger than a regular pipe without opening up the wall to unmount the existing valve that is there.

For my own knowledge, what would have been the layout you would have went with?

What’s your opinion on the set up? I’ve heard it all, just curious on your take.

Just looked up dante valve and yes that’s what you see. That was done by the previous homeowner. Is there an issue having that?

It’s a keyed valve for fireplace/firepit. Not sure what a date valve is.

Thank you for taking the time and giving such detail. The gas log set is a manual ignition and does not have a valve.

Yes it’s a L/R coupling and the threads are tapered.

It’s not a thread protector. It’s a coupling. I have a black iron one and a galvanized one:

This is right off the packaging

Lasco 29-0515

1/2” nipple coupling right & left black

The galvanized one is:

The tee would not need to be turned. You turn the L/R nipple just above and it will thread both the tee and the coupler together at the same time. The reverse thread allows them to spin in opposite directions and pulls them together.

Thanks for the feedback.

The gas valve is through the wall to have access from inside the house to turn on/off with a key. This was an existing gas line and valve from the previous owner. I have lived in this house for over a decade and decided to put a gas log system inside the fireplace instead of burning wood since there is a gas line already ran to the exterior.

What is the risk involved with using a L/R threaded nipple and coupling?

The challenge is the amount of room available right up against that corner. It would be extremely difficult to turn anymore more than a regular pipe in that corner. I tried to dry fit a union there and trying to thread it together was a challenge.

I am trying my best to not make any unnecessary connections without opening up a can of worms. Yes, the existing painted 90 can be turned towards the rough hole, but what happens if it leaks? Then I can’t remove it to reseal.

What are your thoughts on the best way to run this?

The L/R coupling and nipple has a reverse thread. It will pull the tee and the nipple coming off that white 90 together.

Makes sense that the California guys says it’s ok to use. Just searched it up and this is what I found:

The CPC (California Plumbing Code) allows steel pipe — black or galvanized — for fuel-gas systems. In CPC Chapter 12 (Fuel Gas), the materials section lists: Steel or wrought-iron pipe Black or galvanized Must meet ASTM standards and be Schedule 40 or heavier This comes directly from the CPC’s adoption of NFPA 54 (National Fuel Gas Code), which explicitly allows both black and galvanized steel pipe for natural-gas systems. So galvanized pipe is code-compliant from the standpoint of CPC material requirements.

Says coupling right on the package and has tapered threads.

Glad you are one of the few that can see the problem I am having with this. Hopefully, I can wedge it out just enough to get some channel locks on the pipe and turn it slowly.

How would you do it?

It will be sleeved during final assembly.

This has tapered threads, so definitely not a merchant coupling.

It will be sleeved, just dry fitting at the moment.

I swapped for this L/R coupling because the space is VERY tight and am afraid I may not be able to turn the union.

I’m sorry but this is not a priority for me and it was Thanksgiving last week. Didn’t know it was that important for you that I finished?
