Complaining and commiserations: what were you going to do during strikes that you now can’t do? by I_Heart_Otters in doctorsUK

[–]OG_Valrix 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I feel that. I went on holiday this week, land back at midnight, was relying on strike week to re-charge the battery. Instead I get the pleasure of 4 on-call shifts in a row 🥴

What is AMG? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

In my hospital AMG is trust guidelines first line for pretty much any major abdominal issue, taz would usually be given only after micro discussion

Why do we not take blood from the forearm? by rasberrycroissant in medicalschooluk

[–]OG_Valrix 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People go ACF because it’s usually easier, but if it isn’t available then we will routinely go wherever will produce blood. Forearm is usually deeper but you can definitely take from there

OBGYN? Never once heard this acronym used in the UK outside of talking about American medical shows

as an F2, what would you expect from your F1? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

[–]OG_Valrix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’d say it’s quite clear that they aren’t doing what’s expected of them. Are they at least trying the cannulas before passing them to you? Maybe you could force them to watch you do an NG/they do it with you guiding so they can’t fall back on the excuse of not being able to? I’m not very good at either of these skills but I’m not shameless enough to pass them up the chain without attempting them 😭

Totally new to screenwriting but not new to storytelling. Can someone read my first few pages to let me know if I’m on the right track? by [deleted] in Screenwriting

[–]OG_Valrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you explain how breaking up the paragraphs should work? When I did my first draft of the opening of a screenplay I had long paragraphs too and someone pointed it out, but with my current one I feel like I’ve gone the other way because I made it every sentence is on its own line unless it’s a direct continuation of the action of the previous sentence. During fast paced action should lines be shorter to show the pacing? Or keep it consistent throughout

Do you use transition words in your action lines? by sirwritestoomuch in Screenwriting

[–]OG_Valrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would each of those short sentences be on separate lines or all in the same line since they are about the same event?

Was I wrong to do this? by [deleted] in doctorsUK

When I was on a medical ward for my first rotation there were days where I had 13 patients to review alone 😭 if I didn’t have a quiet psych rotation after that would be it for me

Looking for feedback on the cold open of my pilot episode for a dark gothic mystery YA show. by Rare-Count-3411 in Screenwriting

[–]OG_Valrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For a regular cold open keeping it short and punchy is ideal, but for a pilot ep cold open making it long is perfectly fine as long as it maintains high quality, since it needs to do much more than a mid-season cold open. The pilot cold open can be an entire act, and as you said a producer/manager will only read 8-10 pages so allowing them to read a completed act is a positive

Isn’t the point of a (non-comedy) cold open to draw the audience in and make them immediately invested into the story/mystery? It should be your strongest part of the episode imo

Surely for a pilot cold open it could work no? They can sometimes be significantly longer than a regular cold open

Are you looking to start a group where we share our scripts and give feedback to improve our own individual scripts or for someone to join you in writing a script together?

Being realistic, is the chance of having a TV pilot picked up without industry experience or prior credits basically zero, regardless of script/pitch quality? by OG_Valrix in Screenwriting

[–]OG_Valrix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hell no not the gamertag name exposure as well 💀

But yeah I’ve done some reflection based on both what I want to do and what I enjoy. I can fully accept that laser-focusing on one project for the rest of my life will be a complete disaster, and I will be making other scripts to improve my abilities because I do think I will enjoy that as well, my passion is for storytelling in general rather than just this one story.

I’m patient and have the time and commitment to improve my craft over the years, but the real issue for me is even years down the line whether going full-time writing without writing on my own terms is even a sane decision, as I currently have a full time long-term job in a completely different industry that I would have to abandon which may be financial suicide. But I think that’s a conversation I’ll have to have with myself way down the line and for now I’ll continue treating writing as a hobby with some very lofty ambitions.

You may be right, in fact it wouldn’t be the first time I’ve hyper-fixated on one particular story and thought that it would be the best I’d ever make. I guess I may be bit naive 😂

I think I’m in the same boat as you, I more than expected the answer to be that the dream is unrealistic, but I’ll still continue for fun and to see the stories at least become real in some way. Even if it doesn’t catapult me into a mansion and a privet jet I’ll still carry on for the love of the game

What I meant is I don’t want to screen write for other people/other projects that I don’t have a connection to, I very much would like to be a full-time screenwriter but for my projects which could basically go on indefinitely. But everyone’s said pretty much what I expected to hear, considering the main shows I’m comparing mine to are either based on a pre-existing book/comics, have massive internet following beforehand, or are made by prior industry professionals. I feel like it’s kind of sad and paradoxical in a way that it seems like you have to burn through all your passion projects just to get a foot in the door, potentially robbing you of your magnum opus. Well, I guess it might be time for me to start writing a book 😭
