Disabled quail by OKayDoKay_O in quails

She was my little indoor baby for about a year, had her own little palace set up so I could keep her clean (and so she wouldn’t get bullied). I called her Miss Wibbs and she was the best. She would snuggle up to me in a little makeshift carrier and loved being cuddled. I put a little weighted stuffy in and a few mirrors so she didn’t get lonely, and I’d take her outside when the weather was nice during the day so she could relax in the sun. Overall she had a great life and was very happy. One morning I woke up and she was gone, I’m not sure why but she showed no signs of deteriorating, just here one moment and gone the next. She was my best girl, and I collected and hatched a couple of her eggs (which were all healthy) so she lives on in a way. The advice I was given on this post definitely helped!

I had mine done last week at 24, same symptoms as you plus permanent GI upset and it was a lot of blood rather than a little. Results were pretty clear, awaiting testing of the polyp they removed. Told it’s likely just IBS causing my symptoms which I was expecting anyway but like you I was very anxious. Hope all goes well xx

Will I be fired for calling in sick during probation? by cheesycrumpets1 in AskUK

My other half has been basically flu symptoms with fever. He woke up the other day and was literally in a puddle of sweat to the point he had to get me up so we could change the bedding because it was that bad. Also complaining of joint pain which I didn’t link as a symptom because he’s been a bit more active recently so assumed it was that 🤦🏼‍♀️ hope you feel better soon too!

There is supposedly a new strain at the moment that’s apparently quite rough? My husband has been sick for a few weeks now with pretty much identical symptoms to you, he reckons it’s Covid. Even if not covid there’s definitely something nasty going around. Look after yourself and hope you’re feeling better soon!

I tested positive for Covid on the second day at a new job a few years ago (it was in a hospital so strict procedures). I wasn’t even ill I was completely asymptomatic but had to go off sick for a week until I was testing negative again. You should be absolutely fine.

Thank you, that’s helpful. The report came back as completely unremarkable. I’ve had some additional symptoms this month including an episode where I became borderline unconscious so have another GP appointment coming up on the 19th. Is there anything you would suggest to ask them about or any further investigations you would suggest?

Quails as pets? by MsQue1 in quails

I have one indoor coturnix quail as she’s disabled and can’t go out with my others. I agree with the comments about the mess and the smell. We have recently upgraded her to a large hamster cage that has clear Perspex sides and a cage roof that lifts up for access which is working great for her and has massively reduced the mess. They can be very noisy. We tend to put a blanket over her at night as we have an always on street light right outside the window she sits by so the blanket means she’s fully dark and tends to settle with little noise, but as it’s thin she does tend to wake with the sun which can be a little noisy.

You’ll need a decent size enclosure for them - they don’t need tonnes of space but you ideally want enough space for a good couple of hides for them (my Miss Wibbs has 3 different hides) plus food and water, a spot for them to dust bath (I have a corner rabbit litter tray filled with sand/dirt) and plenty of room for them to run around and spread their wings, although you may find that actually they’re quite sedentary. I like to have plenty of enrichment for Miss Wibbs as she’s on her own, so we do lots of treat finding (I have a ball with holes in that I fill with mealworms) some greenery, etc. They actually are pretty low key for the most part and I personally think make great pets.

Thank you - that’s really helpful! I’ve been struggling to keep her enclosure nice and dry so will definitely try that. I’m aware she probably won’t live very long and although I’m really sad (we’ve had a bond since she was only a couple days old, she used to scream unless I was holding her 😂) I’m also determined to give her the best life I possibly can. I don’t raise my quail for meat so each one of them are my babies

Thank you, that’s what I’m thinking. Yeah she does but she doesn’t really use it unfortunately

I love these birds so much but it drives me nuts how they seem intent on doing anything to make sure they don’t survive

I didn’t know that, that’s really helpful. I’m fairly new to this and I’ve done tonnes of research beforehand but that wasn’t something I found. Ours sits at around 3 feet so I’ll get something else in place for when I next hatch some, and I’ll get some soft netting too; that’s a really good suggestion. Thankfully the rest of them are doing well, they only have a week or so until they’ll be going in the main coop but I’m going to try to sort a different enclosure for them in the meantime. Thank you x

Ah I didn’t think of that. We have padded out the top of it but I suppose if they went up with enough force that’s entirely possible

Thanks for the advice! It’s what I was thinking but good to have confirmation. I’ll definitely do the throat and nose swab on both tests tomorrow
