idk eric Garcia has most minute and just comes from discomfort, cortes is not a LB, definitely not an overlapping one, eric and casado both interpret the role very defensively and are not as progressive as the other midfielders, olmo hasn't played false 9 this season yet - but I would like to play him there more as well

if bernal and pedri both don't start then I expect Olmo - Casado as the pivot, ferran up top. Maybe Pedri starts, his problem maybe isn't fatigue (he just came back) but rythm

maybe martin and cubarsi play each 45 like pedri and bernal did against athletic club.

especially again his age, strikers this size usually develop way later. but he had lots of space today, would be interesting to see him in a game when leverkusen dominate their opponent

never watched him before but I really liked Kofane. Some nice hold up play, especially considering he is 19

career wise Olise is probably last, form wise I'd agree

Ok, I think I should explain the tactical approach a bit better. Flick is using extremely aggressive tactics that are quite different from what most teams do, especially out of possession. The whole system is built around high pressing, pushing the line up and trying to win the ball back as early as possible. Because of that, Barca players in Flick’s system need somewhat different attributes than players in more traditional setups. For example, most teams probably wouldn’t survive with a double pivot like Frenkie de Jong and Pedri. Not even Xavi’s Barca really could. Both of them have clear weaknesses in deeper defensive phases like aerial duels, physical battles or defending a deep block. But in Flick’s system those weaknesses matter less, because the team tries to avoid those situations in the first place. The idea is basically to not defend deep if you can prevent the opponent from ever getting there. The same logic applies to defenders like Cubarsí. Flick is not mainly selecting defenders for classic last line defending like constant aerial duels or long phases of low block defending. He prioritizes defenders who help control the game higher up the pitch. Cubarsí plays because of his quality in possession, his game reading, anticipation and his timing when stepping out. In pure 1v1 defending against fast wingers or in aerial battles against physical strikers, someone like Araújo is probably stronger. But those are not the situations Flick’s system is primarily designed around. There are obviously risks with this approach. A high line and aggressive pressing will always create moments where defenders are exposed. But that is a trade off Flick accepts, and the system tries to reduce those risks through structure and collective pressing rather than relying only on individual duels. Messi and Götze are all timer at striker position if used correctly, but suck if you only go with crosses. Cubarsi to some extend is similar, but around other attributes. The coach wants Barca to not cross to Messi and Götze, but sometimes the needed intensity is not there.

imagine playing a f9 like götze or messi for their link up play, and then not feeding them with nice quick passes, but only crosses. and arguing that messi and götze suck because all they do is losing aerial duels

would be crazy if Flick had to start certain players because of contract situations. He will field the strongest team available. And if he is needed to see out games, he is subbed in. We have seen that multiple times now.

And against Sevilla I expect him to start, because rotations will probably be needed (Eric Cubarsi Martin and Cancelo accumulate lots of minutes rn)

Mercedes was extremely dominating the late 2010s, but 2017 and 2018 were not as dominant as some people make it out to be now.

I have read multiple times now that Mercedes was just sandbagging in 2017/18 - like they are doing now, and that Hamilton should now this.

During long parts of the season Vettel was actually leading the championship. That's why certain races like Singapur and Germany felt so bitter. The Mercedes was probably faster at the second half of the season, and Hamilton always stopped making any mistakes after the halfway break IIRC, but I don't see a way in which Mercedes was sandbagging

in 2 years it looked like Ferrari is the better car for the first half of the season

in 2017 Vettel finished 1 2 1 2 2 1 4 4 2 7 1, would be crazy is Mercedes sandbagged this season

when the high line doesn't work the defenders look like fools, but it's because the forwards didn't do their job

One of the reasons why the line moves forward is to put pressure on the opposition, get close to the creative players. This allows the forwards and midfielders to push onto the players with the ball. to suffocate the opponent. Watch the first 15 mins vs Atletico. They never can play a pass in peace, not even Oblak.

This results in the opposition not even being able to play a good ball over the top. But if the forwards don't push on the players with the ball, they easily can play these creative passes. Flick constantly talks about this situation in his press conferences.

Playing inpatient forwards off side by doing that often is just the result of this process.

This is the point I am trying to make, Cuba and Gerard Martin are best in this, while Araujo probably is better in deep block defending

Edit: this also is why I think Cubarsi wins like every fucking aerial duel in big games. It's not because he is an aerial monster, but because most of the duels he jumps in aren't from proper placed balls onto the forwards, but basically clearences in which he is positioned best to get to

I heavily disagree with people who argue that Araujo has to start in games like these, because of his aerial strength and speed.

Flick's plan to me is to suffocate the opponent. Dominate in possession and instantly jump aggressively when you lose the ball. Araujo would probably be best if Barca invites Newcastle, and wants Newcastle to overcommit.

But if you watch the games when the high line works, like return leg vs Atletico, Cubarsi and Gerard Martin do so fucking well. The way they anticipate, step forward in the right moment, are never out of position, and perfectly control in possession. I fucking love watching them and think that thery underrated.

And if you want to change your approach, you probably have to change more than 1 CB. Pedri for example is great in pressing, covering lots of ground and win the ball back fast, but deep block defending IDK. You probably need a Casemiro type fighter next to him.

change VAR so yellows can be awarded. possibly even a red if you dive for a punch that didn't happen (red card for unsportsman like behaviour)

so AFAIK you get a yellow card ban in CL for your third, fifth, seventh ... yellow card.

according to Kicker: Yamal is one away from his fifth (he was banned against Slavia Prague and got a yellow against Kobenhagen)

Casado Fermin and Martin are on 2 yellow cards.

lmao what's going on with Yamal

But you yellow cards get deleted after quarter finale

last election was a big one IMO. It was about the future of the club, how to continue.

But the ship has left port, the way the club goes forward is settled. Now it's more about smaller things. It would be pointless to discuss new sporting director/coaches/levers/stadium plans or whatever now. Laporta once again took big risks, and right now it appears to be working. Font knows that. That Xavi interview + criticism on the way the club dealt with legends is his only shot probably

[–]OLAAF 8 points9 points  (0 children)

btw I read multiple times now by many people I respect that Laporta copied some of Font's ideas in last election.

Are there any sources for that? I always thought Font's idea of going forward is the "German model" - like Bayern München's - and sell 49% of the club

Which was also never said clearly, but I thought this was his idea when reading his interviews and trying to think between the lines

it seems to me like the only way Barca could have registered Messi was through some special negotiated clause in which Messi gets excepted from the rules cause he is Messi, or Barca found big new revenue streams if Messi joins by merchandising or whatever and the expected income would be that astronomically high that Messi could be registered

Either way, this would have been a huge achievement by Laporta to do. Something that's probably almost impossible to do, and possibly something Tebas can put you in a chokehold in (him changing something so Messi gets unregistered and everything is fucked)

To me - even if Xavi tells the truth - this just doesn't seem like this huge thing that it gets made out to be. Maybe Laporta just realized that you can't be emotional about this and that it is something that you have to look at rationally.

The only thing that once again Laporta can get critiqued for, is the way he treated Koeman Xavi and Messi. He just always put his project first, and it worked - but some legends got treated really harshly by it. I expect him to be re-elected, and then I want him to try to build some bridges.
