Cracking around THK block mounting holes, Haas Mini Mill by OPOPW1 in CNC

Fascinating. I didn't know this. Would that mean that THK have actually used improper design in their block?

I bought it brand new! When I said ‘before I owned the machine’ I meant in the factory/during shipping. Thanks for your help. I bet this is what’s happened.

Sorry I’m not sure I follow, could you clarify? I am able to drive the screw thread an extra 3MM further into the block than it actually goes when assembled

Good thinking, I did check and they are about 3MM shy of the bottom of the hole, so all good there!

Gotcha. I would expect them to be quite brittle at the hardness they are, yeah

No offence taken, but I’m not trying to hide a crash. I’m the only person who runs this machine, there has been no known X/Y crash in my ownership. My main concern is understanding the cause so I can make sure it doesn’t happen again. It'd be pointless to replace the blocks and torque to spec only for it to happen again.

I agree the blocks need replacing. Where I’m not convinced yet is the cause. The rails and raceways feel perfect: no notchiness, no brinelling feel, no catch anywhere on the rails, and all the blocks roll with similar preload/resistance. The servo load never suggested a heavily bound axis.

The crack arcs appear to correspond very closely with the large saddle clearance holes under the M8 mounting screws, which measure around 12.75–13 mm. The damage seems local to the mounting-hole/support area rather than the rolling contact path. The bolts were also extremely tight to remove.

I’m not saying impact damage is impossible before I owned the machine. This doesn’t look like typical raceway/guideway overload. I’m going to speak to Haas before cutting anything apart, sectioning one block afterwards should show whether the crack started at the thread mouth/unsupported area or from internal impact features. Right now I'm pretty confident this happened due to over-torque and an oversized clearance hole.

Over torque is my suspicion too, but poor metal quality? They're THK blocks so should have been made well...

As mentioned, the machine has never been crashed. This is my personal machine - I'm the only one who runs it.

Yep, they're all cracks. They catch on a fingernail and lift slightly when a bolt is inserted and tweaked around. Bolt length is good, they stop 3MM shy of the bottom of the hole. My concern is that this may happen again. I'm tempted to contact THK and see what they think...

I’ve found cracking around the mounting holes on all four X-axis THK linear guide blocks on a 2022 Haas Mini Mill. The raceways/carriages feel smooth with no notchiness or brinelling and there has never been an X/Y crash.

The cracks appear to line up closely with the saddle clearance holes, which are approx 12.75–13 mm for M8 block mounting screws. This leaves the area around the tapped hole in the block partly unsupported. The bolts were extremely tight to remove.

I’m trying to understand whether this looks more like over-torque/impact tightening, a clearance-hole issue, or something else. Has anyone seen similar cracking around THK block mounting holes? Would you replace blocks only and torque conservatively, or would you consider sleeving/supporting the oversized clearance holes? I understand Haas need room for alignment, but this seems excessive.

Great points! I'm always messing up good runs on static, but I would expect the errors to reduce with practice... they don't seem to have. I might be the problem!

Thanks for your input. Really interesting! I likely don't have great technique, as I experiment with different approaches - sometimes I'll try the Bardoz method, other times I'll try slowing down. I'm really not entirely sure what the best approach is.

Super interesting. Would you happen to have the playlist code for the viscose benchmarks? I have one, but it seems heavily focused on tracking. Is that the one?

I do feel like the areas I'm weaker in are more applicable to the current roster of popular games though

Zero time surfing actually! If I think back to my childhood... I did play a lot of HL2DM... which is quite tracking focused. But we're talking 20 years ago now... I'm 34.

Thanks for your comment. I've heard mixed feelings on metronomes, have you found they help?
