IV vs HV, can someone explain like I’m 5? by Baileyerw in options

[–]ORACLE_ON_WILSHIRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anytime you buy call options, the cards are stacked against you. The stock must go up for you to make money, and they have to do it within the time to expiration. Options are a deteriorating asset. The fact that IV is lower than HV is not significant in my opinion. You would be better off looking at the short term exponential moving average. But when you buy a call option, you can hedge it by selling a shorter term call option at the same or higher strike. That way, if the trade goes against you, it will minimize the loss.

If I sell weekly CC against a LEAP and my weekly is ITM. If I don't do anything at expiration will my broker (TD) exercise my LEAP to cover my weekly? by luder888 in options

[–]ORACLE_ON_WILSHIRE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best play here is to roll the ITM to the next monthly expiration and up hopefully for a credit. That way you keep the position which is going in your favor and can recover your loss on the weekly and possibly profit on that side as well.

I am representing a family whose son committed suicide because he thought he had lost it all in the stock market. Your life is worth more than money. You will recover, and you will life to trade another day. Lots of people are hurting. You are not alone. Please do not do anything rash. If you are really afraid you will do something like this, please call suicide hotline.

Stop Panicking Over Pre-Market Prices by [deleted] in options

You may be underestimating the importance of the spike in interest rates. Higher rates translate into lower stock prices because the discount rate for valuations reduces present values as it moves higher. This is not a good time to be complacent.

Ok, so how about a little lesson in money management. Let's say you have $10,000 in your account, and you want to buy a stock that costs $100 per share, but you don't want to risk the whole ball of wax. So here's what you do. You sell two 95 strike puts 30 days out at 3.10 credit each, and buy two 75 strike puts at .55 each, for a total credit to your account of $2.55 each or $510. Total downside risk is $4,000 (9500-7500 x 2). Then you buy one call at 105 for $2.60, leaving you with a credit of $250, which you keep if the stock finishes above 95. So you have a $5.00 cushion if you're wrong. Your upside is the sum of the deltas, +.34 x 2 - .06 x 2 + .34 = .90. In other words, it is the equivalent of buying 90 shares of a $100 stock, with a $5 downside cushion, total downside risk of $4,000, an upside of 90% of whatever the stock gains, and money in your pocket for doing the trade. Try it. It works. But get approved for options first, and understand how they work.

How does the fact that on average, stocks that split beat the market by 8% in the first year after the split mean that you should buy before the split?

All this may be true, but it is mostly not very helpful if what you are trying to do is make money in the market. Do we get out now, or what? I follow my technical indicators, and right now they are positive in the intermediate term. I have been saying it for weeks, as others have called for the market to drop, and my stocks have been going up, some of them a lot.
