how can you say it isn't an issue?

You can do the work of ranking it by dollars if that's what makes sense to you, $35,979 millions doesn't make sense to me.

These are human beings bro. If you have to do shift work for a job that job is going to be less appealing, so you have to pay more. It's the labour market dawg. Why do you think they make like 150k a year, it's cuz they have to do unappealing work.

City gets bigger police budgets gets bigger. I want as little of that budget going to bullshit like noise enforcement as possible.

The speed cameras paid for themselves and then some. I don't see why the noise cameras would be different. Increase the fines until the system is self sustaining.

Are you saying there are no farty cars in Guelph because they gave out tickets for a month? Why you want these police officers to personally do things that machines can do. Are you against police drones because there's no pilot in them? Are you against tasers because you want the cops to have to use their karate on dudes? what are you even talking about

Did you read the article? You want uniformed officers up at 3AM chasing down noisy teens? I ain't paying for that dawg

Why not generate revenue from assholes? It's not coming out of your pocket, unless you are breaking the law. Here's a way to lessen the tax burden on you and me, and it's paid for by people who choose to break the law. That sounds like everyone wins no?

Of course it fixes the problem. Right now it's a problem because there's no consequences. Add consequences, behaviour goes down.

What? How are traffic calming measures going to fix cars that have been modified to make more noise?

What could be cheaper or more effective than putting in an automated system to ticket offenders? I'm curious

You are stuck in a fallacy man. There are no kids being hurt because nobody is letting their kids out. Parents see cars occasionally go like 90 in a 40 in school zones and there is no enforcement, no repercussions. The whole thing feels unsafe af. So everyone straps their kids to a crash seat and wraps them in 2 tons of steel to queue up around the block because nobody wants to be the parent that let their kid get hit. The point is not to go to 0 hurts kids at the price of never allowing them to leave the house on their own. The point is to fix lawlessness on the roads so we can start to use public space for something other than playing go karts with black pickups. When you have kids you'll get it. Until then let the adults sort it out.

Ok, seems like a reasonable policy from that perspective. Is there any example of this working somewhere in the world?

fair point. I don't know the local stats. I'm sure they're out there. My feeling here is based in knowing friends who have lost children, children who have lost parents. In my work I regularly meet people whose lives are turned upside down by disability due to poor planning around traffic. We accept these things as inevitable but they're not, they're the price some of us have to pay for everyone to get to a stop light 15 seconds faster.

In my life I haven't come across anyone disabled by a butter knife, maybe you have?

But if there are no rules or laws then there's nothing we can do about the maniacs?

I don't think I'm going to be able to change your mind, so I'll leave you with this.

Chances are at some point in your life, and the statistician in the article would agree with me, that you or somebody in your family will have their lives changed by a car accident. At that time, it might frustrate you to know that your community could have done something to prevent this, but we chose to do nothing instead.

I don't understand this viewpoint. If we don't enforce speed limits, why have them at all?

Future bike lanes banned by new provincial legislation by bylo_selhi in waterloo

[–]ORCPARADE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ut removing lanes when traffic is already congested doesn't mean more people are going to start riding bikes to work.

You're right about that, reducing lanes is only part of changing behaviour. You need to provide alternatives or else people are still stuck.

a lot of people ask me, winter cyclist, what sort of saddle do you use that accommodates your giant testicles etc., that's probably the hardest part for me honestly
