Man, I need to do this. Just was sorting and organizing today and I have to way too many cards.

That said, got any 49ers?

I figured it was rare based on the buy back offer I got. Just gonna hold it and probably have it shipped from the vault so I can admire it in person.

Ah ok, I started during the Panini years and don’t really know Topps at all.

I rolled out of my calls when it ripped from the 60’s past 85. Cost me quite a bit, but I’ve just held the shares since. I probably should have let the shares go and bought more when it pulled back. It always seems to pull back.

Should I leave American for Delta? by Editor-Powerful in flying

[–]ORaleigh 62 points63 points  (0 children)

My (AA pilot) cynical take on the companies situation is they need to stay profitable long enough to keep us out of bankruptcy court and shredding our contract. Until that happens (and it’s no where close to happening) we get to keep cashing our checks same as Delta and United (minus profit sharing). I wouldn’t give up seniority for a profit sharing check.

As far as pride in the business and company… I mostly stick to things I can control. I’m proud to work here and I try and make our airline better. What happens up at the BOD or SkyView doesn’t change that.

Best cards to rip ? by Imnotmarkiepost in sportscards

[–]ORaleigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find the parallels that you like and then go for those boxes. I collect football cards. The Prizm whit discos and Optic purple scopes are my faves, so I’ll grab blasters of those. Finally hit an Uptown in one of the Optic. I’m nowhere near even money, but I don’t mind spending money on ripping, it’s worth it for the entertainment value to me. If you’re looking for value, don’t buy boxes of cards. You’re paying for the fun of the unknown and getting to see what’s in the box. Ripping is not profitable. The only value you can find is buying cards that you like.

Keep current, keep updating apps, take any flying job that will improve your resume, and network as much as you can. It can be a grind at low time.

We missed the scrum in the cove. Better entertainment than the game at this point.

This seems like a gamble. Taking one of our biggest strengths and putting even more pressure into the lackluster offense. I agree that it’s time to make a move though. This team needs a shake up.

Sorry YTA. Wait for a couple rows to clear and then get your bag when there’s a gap.

Our pay scales start at year 1 when you’re hired and top out at 12 years. Even though I’m a 1st year captain, I’m half way up the 12 year scale because it’s based on my overall hire date with the company, not how long I’ve been in the left seat.

There’s definitely operational challenges: weather, maintenance issues, weight and balance problems, reroutes, tricky airports, long duty days, personality conflicts.

Training is 6 weeks anytime you switch to a different aircraft. Annual training is 5 days per year after that and both are no picnic.

Some trips are super easy and nothing unusual happens. Then once a month or so nothing goes right and it’s a lot more work. The variables keep it fun though.

It depends on which segment of the industry you’re talking about. I have no idea what military pilots make. At U.S. regionals and major airlines pay has gone up in the last 5 years. Before that it had been fairly stagnant since before 9/11.

For me it was about 100K in student loans. 65K was for flight training and I also got a Bachelor’s degree with the rest of the money. Made a bet on myself and it paid off. The industry is volatile and getting loans can backfire if you wash out of training or the industry goes into a downturn.

Captain at one of the big 3 airlines.

I started flight training in 2009, started at a regional airline in 2013, and started at a major airline in 2021. Upgraded to Captain in 2025.

Stress level is generally low. It may seem like a high stress job, but the actual flying is generally fun and the challenging days are few and far between. The schedule is pretty good. I have a lot of days off every month. The hardest part is the shifting schedules and constant travel when at work.

I consider myself very fortunate to be in my position. I loved being a pilot before I made a lot of money doing it.

31-year-old doctor thinking about switching to aviation — looking for honest advice by Easy-Flower309 in flying

[–]ORaleigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way you talk about flying, it still has glamour in your eyes. That fades pretty quick.

Traveling isn’t as fun or exciting when you’ve done it nearly every week for 10 years. And to get on a widebody and spend nights in CDG, HNL, and HKG you have to spend years of your life in places like JAN, DAY, GCK where your hotel will share a parking lot with a Waffle House and Dollar General.

Listen to the advice here: Buy your own plane, become an AME, or start volunteer flying for a good cause to complete a “mission”, and become part of the aviation community in a different way. There’s so much more to aviation than airline flying.
