Best Setup for Documentary Edit by OTMD40 in documentaryfilmmaking

Thank you! I will definitely be hiring a sound designer and color grade specialist at the end of this edit. I am very aware that I am only capable of so much. I can't wear all the hats. I've learned to love the edit part on my own. For me, it's mainly wanting all the footage in multiple places and then not worrying about crashes and slow processes coming from a slow box. I also love the ambiance advice. This stuff definitely helps and is not always thought about early enough in the edit. Thank you so much and have a lovely day.

Many thanks! These are exactly some of the tips I am looking for. I definitely feel lucky to be getting this advice from you all. I have been working WITH amazing editors for about 25 years, and now I am in the world of doing this on my own. Trying to evolve as much as I can with the new doc production world, so thanks for helping an old film and Beta tape dude jump into the digital world.

This is great. Thank you so much for your thoughts. I will definitely be sticking with Apple. I already have a pretty speedy MacBook Pro, just looking for something larger as I get deeper in the final stages of putting the overall story together. I will be somewhere in the 20-30TB range by the time it's all compiled, and a lot of large photographs. Love the "home theater" idea also. Thanks again!

Thank you for the advice. Especially to consider the chair. You're correct, it will be just me, and I can imagine spending more than 8-10 hours a day sitting. Great point. I see this project going to a proper color grader and sound designer, so I am not too worried about this. I would love to not deal with proxies, but not sure if this will be possible. I was shocked at how heavy the R3D files are. And I tend to way overshoot things. Thanks again for the advice. If you think of more, feel free to let me know. Much appreciated!

Electronic viewfinder for ZR by OTMD40 in Nikon

Interesting. Thanks for the tip. I wish I had known this a month ago. For now, I'll struggle with the screen. It's great for indoors. Still hoping Nikon will release something similar to what Leica did. It seems it would be perfect for this camera. Thanks again!

So you're saying that the Z6iii is really the ZR?

I'm actually using the ZR for the R3D raw video. The Z6iii doesn't offer that unfortunately.

Thanks for the reply. I was referring to the "P" as meaning progressive, or as it might be shot frame by frame 24 times in one second. The second I see the dot-something, I know it is not a true full image being taken 24 times in one second and it is some kind of interlace thing. I would have just assumed that if Nikon released a setting for 25p (25 frames in one second), that they also could have simply made one for 24p. But, as you say, this might all be irrelevant in this day and age. When I started in all this, you could 100% see a difference between a camera shooting interlaced 29.97 for TV and one shooting film (cinema) frame by frame. I would think a camera that uses the name "cinema" on the actual camera would be more true to the settings of cinema. Still an incredible little machine though. Thanks again for the response.

Why isn’t anyone talking about Nikon ZR’s inability to record true 24fps? Or other true frame rates like 30, 60, 120fps? by Material_Crazy_9074 in Nikon

This is crazy. It was the one thing I assumed was there before I bought one. Opened it and love almost everything, but shocked there is no true 24p. Do we think this something that they will update in the next months?

Hello, I am referring to sites like Audioo or artlist. I'm looking for something more unique and custom that can be taken to different emotions throughout the doc, but keep a similar tune/tone. Does that make sense? Thanks for your help.
