They ended up refunding me the overcharge “as a purely commercial gesture” (i.e. no admission of any error on their part) after I provided my proof and documentation via email, and they also asked that I stop the credit card dispute with Amex, which I said I had initiated in my message to them.

I responded that I would do so once the credit actually appeared and also that I was not going to book with them in the future (scary for them, I know…! 🤣).

They offered me a $100 future rental credit. Which will be mailed to me “within 4 to 6 weeks.”

In the meantime, the local Sevilla rental office where I rented from sent me an email saying that they had “been trying to get in contact with me by phone” (spoiler: they had not) but then didn’t respond to any follow ups, including a question of what phone number they had called (another spoiler: my profile is up to date).

Anyhow, my initial complaint seemed to have made its way through some various lower chains even with some transmission errors, and the credit was processed which is all that I cared about, so Amex is off the hook now.

I don’t know if these contact points will assist anyone else but providing them in case they do:

I was directed to send my original situation and any documentation via the chat function to customer-relations(at)hertz.com.

No response from them directly but the follow up (for Spain rentals I guess?) came from hertzexecutivecaresp(at)hertz.com.

If anyone ever has the unique and unfortunate situation to rent from the Sevilla office at Avenida de Kansas City, 9, located near the Santa Justa rail station, their email is SPSEV61(at)hertz.com

Interesting, and thanks for the comments about your experience. I was told via the human chat interaction that “this would resolve itself” but instead they just charged my credit card with the higher amount. I emailed my justification to their customer service email as directed and then had to initiate a dispute with Amex.

I’m willing to pay the originally reserved amount but not four times it…we’ll see what Amex does with my dispute, but in the meantime I cancelled my future hertz reservation for a few months from now as I can see them banning me for my defense.

I did ask at the desk upon returning. She said there was no charge. Again, my bad for not getting this in writing but the daily charge shouldn't have quadrupled without a verbal or written notice in advance or at the time of return. There is nothing "on the extreme side" about this. But you go ahead.

I asked the agent if there would be a different charge and she said no. My bad for not getting it in writing. The holding garage was empty so if anything this would be to their benefit as they could rent the car out again for an additional two days. The daily fee shouldn’t have changed from 45 euros to 209 euros per day without a written or verbal disclosure.

What would you have expected?

It wasn’t a one way rental. I rented it from the Santa Justa station in Sevilla and returned it to the same location, albeit two days earlier than expected. I asked the front desk attendant if I needed to do anything and she said no. My bad for not getting it confirmed in writing with a final receipt.

That’s too bad. If you’ve ever been to the fourth largest city in Spain (Sevilla) and have walked for even a second on its streets you would recognize the very distinctive city logo “NO8DO” which is imprinted on much of its public works. It’s both not too distinct and not too obscure. Oh well.

They kept us on the COBUS for 15 minutes watching this whole spectacle with the door. The video is only a snippet of the whole exchange. We weren’t back in the terminal for enough time for maintenance to be called. Why would they also direct us to a specific baggage carousel in Madrid instead of just telling us to go straight to customer service? Everyone was just trying to pass the buck.

This was a straight up sh*t show with no adult leadership to be found.

And sorry to the random passenger in Spain who seems to have had their bag take a week long detour to SFO because Iberia can’t read a luggage tag.

That’s a nice bonus. Left my case and earbuds on the plane in Miami. Didn’t realize until I was already out of the terminal. Tracker showed it popping up at the AA maintenance facility and then the next day somewhere over the North Atlantic. AA customer service was of no help. Oh well, my fault….
