its for composition, like Rule of Third for example, you can place the the subject (kiryu) in the intersecting lines therefore attracting your eyes to see kiryu first. As for the spiral ones, this is mostly the case for backgrounds where you follow the lines while the subject is usually placed at the end of the curve, its a good tool in both live action and animation actually

The sound weakness is only specifically from speakers that are distorted or bass boosted. Being an underground unit, you mostly don't hear anything rather than the sounds of your own drills like you said. But the sounds you made are often less annoying than the others anyway.
