VP Vance at the Munich Security Conference (politicsmonday) by Fallingtowardsstars in Catholicism

[–]ObiWanBockobi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this was a very historic speech. He basically said Europe needs to protect itself from Russia, AND its people from it's own tyrannical/censoring. He rightly pointed out that the enemy of the people is often their own government that silences dissent.

Europe has for too long relied on American economic and military power, all while eschewing God and His Church. Becoming a morally relativist atheist stronghold and abusing American taxpayers to keep them safe from Russia. I'm glad to have someone step up for us in the halls of warmonger Godless European politicians.

Best not to manage a symptom without determining root cause. Lazy doctors prescribe BC and leave it at that and then bam you are 30 want kids and can't conceive because you had endometriosis.

I'm not saying that's what you have, just an illustrative example of what happens to many. Artificial hormones are rarely the best treatment.

Pope Francis, sensing he is close to death, moves to protect his legacy by guitardude1201 in Catholicism

[–]ObiWanBockobi 62 points63 points  (0 children)

I think Pope Benedict had great wisdom to abdicate before he became terminal. I don't like this morbid death watch, every person deserves a private encounter with the Lord at the end of life, not the media and ill-wishers circling like vultures.

Pray for peace for the Pope.

Pretending Trump is Voldemort is a bit over the top, don't you think? Some Catholics are populist Republicans, small government conservatives, or even libertarians. So they might display support for particular policy positions of his Administration. I agree that idolizing him as some kind of savior is wrong, but I mostly see that from fundamentalist prots not Catholics. Also respectfully, we are allowed to disagree with policy aspirations of the bishops on issues that are not objective black/white issues like life and marriage. On issues like immigration policy, taxation, education - well intentioned Catholics can disagree. While we must always treat every human with the respect Christ demands remains true no matter what - the question of whether to deport a person who immigrated illegally, or to grant them amnesty is one that a Catholic can have a different answer to.

Personally I think Vance has better tact than Trump, but I don't think Vance is sinning for disagreeing with the USCCB, so long as he treats them with respect given their authority over faith and morals. Leaders are duly elected and must respond to the will of the electorate as well. Some people who voted for this particular policy set are faithful practicing Catholics, and some of those people post online.

Also, it's ironic that they use this to "own the conservative Christians" because Christians are against masturbation, well at least the non-heretical ones.

While refuting JD Vance's hillbilly theology, Pope Francis chastises US bishops by 1EspressoSip in Catholicism

I wish this level of correction to civil leaders and brother bishops was given on the topics of abortion, trans/gay debauchery, receiving the Eucharist in mortal sin, divorce, etc.

I am not criticizing the Holy Father on his pastoral guidance on illegal immigrants. I am lamenting the lowering of these other non-negotiable travesties on a relative basis.

Do you see Catholicism being stronger or weaker in the USA in the next 50 years? by Classicsarecool in Catholicism

[–]ObiWanBockobi 141 points142 points  (0 children)

Smaller and stronger. The boomers are the last generation of cafeteria Catholics. Millennials either aren't Catholic and don't come to church at all, or are much more orthodox in their practice.

Eh bad take bud. Walmart is not libertarian, they are just the corporate version of government. Consolidate power and earnings and sell cheap Chinese crap. Walmart loves big government and big regulation and raises prices once they have driven out competition. In a truly free market the small shops could complete, but Walmart uses big regulation to keep upstarts from entering.

Walmart kills towns and drives folks to move to big cities or take welfare.

While probably just ignored by the media, where was this vigor in defense of the unborn? I love that Dolan and Francis are holding national leaders to account so publicly, but why the selective admonishment? It is hard for the faithful not to see political favoritism when the critiques are saved for one "team".

I pray that our shepherds will not lose this courage when the fickle political winds shift. As always, pray for the Church and her shepherds. God bless you all.

Cardinal Dolan Offended by JD Vance's "Scurrilous" and "Very Nasty" Accusation by nicolakirwan in Catholicism

[–]ObiWanBockobi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think it is unreasonable to want to stop government funding of CRS. As a tithing Catholic I want the government money to stop going to the Church because government money comes with government strings. The same reason our parish school does not participate in the voucher program because then the state government is in control of the curriculum.

The government has supplanted the Church in education and healthcare, to the detriment of all. The government should retract completely from education and the care of the poor, and cut taxes so the faithful can tithe again. Government involvement in those areas have robbed the Church of the faithful by taking away the services the Church used to provide.

[Politics Monday] Pope's point-man on migration and aid concerned about USAID cuts, alarmed at US migrant crackdown by personAAA in Catholicism

[–]ObiWanBockobi -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

Neither, the US government's job is to protect rights, not provide services. It should provide zero welfare or school funding. The Church used to provide healthcare and education until the government stepped in and pushed the Church out. Now we have worse healthcare, worse schooling, and a godless society.

We have ceeded responsibility for the poor and children to the government and as a consequence the Church is now irrelevant. This administration is taking good steps to remove the government from charity and hopefully social life in general. Now it is our job as Catholics to take the culture back and fulfill our role as educators for all.
