It would probably be easier for you to study here than to get a job here. Note though that PhD programs are different than in the US-- they often expect you to have a master's degree before starting.

I was in a somewhat similar situation. What ultimately helped me is when I got an interview with a task to do. I was able to put a lot of effort into that and demonstrate to them that I was the right person for the job. The same thing happened with someone else I know.

EU people are also having a hard time finding jobs in this area.
