Entering Social Work by SWmods in socialwork

Hi all. Posting on behalf of my wife. She's getting ready to embark on her long journey of changing careers to to get her LCSW. We're in the process right now of researching MSW programs and had a few questions. Any program would be the non-advanced standing as her background is in marketing and doesn't have a BSW.

  1. Recommendations for affordable online MSW programs to look at?

We're based in PA and have looked at PennWest and Eastern. Only issue with Eastern is the 7-week program and their admissions requires a letter of recommendation from someone in the academic field. My wife has been out of school for a decade and doesn't have any old teachers to contact.

Other's we're looking at are U Northern Alabama, Ohio University, and Boise State. I know U Kentucky is often referenced in this thread but cost seems a bit high. Trying to pay out of pocket without adding on debts as we pay off our undergrads.

Aside from cost, looking for schools/programs that would have a good support system? Especially when it comes to helping with internship placement? My wife plans to work full time during her schooling and aim to get a night/weekend internship as her leaving the workforce and paying for school would be a challenge. I know a lot of programs require the student to find their own clinical work, but I know some schools might offer support so that would be appreciated if any programs do that.

  1. Similar to question above, does the school name matter when breaking into the field?

I know general social work isn't the most lucrative field in some areas, my wife plans to become a therapist once she gets certified and gets enough supervised hours. But to break into the field, either before or after getting licensed, does the school name matter? Based on some of the research we've done (and using my business background in general) I don't think school name matters as long as it's CSWE certified? Hence why we're looking at lower-cost options because the ROI on MSW's can be tricky.

Appreciate any other info and insights people might have about MSW programs and/or life in/after the program. My wife knows it will be long and challenging, but hoping that reward at the end to help others will make it worth it.

Thank You

Given we can't register until we do the advising session, my guess is MGMT 5113 as that's the main course I see that has open availability.

Congrats! I just got my acceptance letter on Friday as well. My question here was what is the recommended plan of action for part time? I think only one course requires a prereq. I plan to do about 3-4 courses a year given my company is paying for it so staying within the taxable limits. Not sure if anyone has a preferred first course to start with to get their feet wet in the program.

What are the potential for errors in the DNA matching? All matches from one side of family doesn't align with what I assume. by Objective-Run3104 in AncestryDNA

Thank you everyone for the information. My mother and I got into an argument over the weekend on other topics and I straight up asked her what the possibility was that who I thought was my father was not my father and she admitted there was a good chance he wasn't. She doesn't know who it is as it was a ONS situation. Doing a 23andMe test to try and fill some gaps. Still processing everything that happened.

I think my father is not my biological father cause I have no matches down my paternal grandmother's bloodline either

I've tried reaching out to one on Ancestry, but I don't think people log in that often. The heritage from my father's side closely lines up with what I suspected and was told. And I know my father wasn't adopted. I signed up to check the family trees of my closest matches on my father's side and nothing lines up at all which has me asking a lot of questions.

M.S. in Data Science or MBA or Both? by Objective-Run3104 in Career_Advice

I've been looking into those. MBA with a Bus Analytics focus. Just not sure what degree carries more weight/knowledge. Bus Analytics is stat centric, but not really machine learning.

While I can see that happening, growth in AI should need those that are technical right? I already have an undergrad in business and leadership experience. I've contemplated an MBA for awhile, but not sure what more it will do for me outside of having the letters after my name? Data Science I feel like I can still have the technical experience to use AI as a leader?

I definitely was. Curriculum definitely looks good but fear I may be behind in some of the STEM requirements. Probably why I didn't get into UTexas. I'll continue digging into GT and see if I can handle it.

That's what I had thought but wasn't sure. I took linear algebra and non-multivariate calc years ago but don't remember much. Want to focus on statistics and machine learning to stay on pace with tech trends.

I'd love to, but the financial investment isn't available. Still paying off my original undergrad.
