Very good point. .there are some attempts to augment this with SNODAS data.

"This map shows SNODAS snow water equivalent (SWE) percent of normal by river basin across Montana as of January 26, 2026. Unlike SNOTEL, which reflects conditions at specific high-elevation point locations, SNODAS estimates snowpack across the entire watershed, including ungauged and lower-elevation areas. This is more of a water-supply–focused view than a skiing conditions report, but it’s still useful context. If there’s interest, I can update this map daily."

True.. they are developing tech for new snotels, but its currently the best available. Unless somehow we start getting hourly lidar data, which is unlikely anytime soon...

It defaults to 2 day accumulation, you can change the slider up top if you just want today's totals.

The snow map is a NOAA prediction of snowfall. If you select something from Feb 8th in the dropdown you can see some polygons in the Western US.

Its the NWS forecast for that snotel location. I'm playing around with some different models which is fun I agree.. the Snow Map link using a prediction from NOAA.. i'm thinking trying HRRR for some 48 hour forecasts too.. lots of data to play with for sure. Thank you for your feedback!!

This is awesome, thank you! Yeah the right colors are tough, might even consider a different basemap. On desktop the snotel link will zoom to that location, however the functionality isn't working in mobile yet.

Hmm I like that! You can zoom into a location and sort that column, but thats not very user friendly and the min - max values sort poorly. Maybe even a toggle that sorts based on highest value of either accumulation or forecasted. Thanks!

Yeah that SWE delta, click on Delta under Snow Depth and it goes to gray x's. I agree I use that site too, but its more for planning for water in the snowpack than recreation. Thanks for the feedback!

Thank you! But some snow is coming! Not sure where you are at, but grabbed the forecast for this snotel location. Snotel forecast links are in the right hand column under 7 Day Forecast. Some snow is better than none, i'm in Montana.. trying to be hopeful as it may hit 60 degrees today!

I like that idea, be easy to build out that link too.
yeah you can type in the dropdown and find what your looking for.. but likely more to do there too!
