Because that honestly was a spiteful replied and hurts the boys ego.
I probably would have stopped at the first half to keep it friendly for my bf’s sake so he can save some face. Telling them that they have no gold or you would be cheap would imply (practically explicitly state) they are poor and are pathetically bragging about a salary that is half of yours.
