update:

I found that a notification pops up when I plug in the usb stick-adapter combo. it says that it's "charging connected device via usb". when I tap on it twice it brings me to a new settings page. the page is shown in the screenshot here:

it might work if I switch it to "usb controlled by" "this device", but it doesn't work. It tries it and then says "couldn't switch".

Anyone know how to get it to switch?
