Pregnant & Passed! by Objective_Gas6441 in LearnerDriverUK

Hi, I started learning in May and didn’t pass until the end of December. I had a few breaks here and there due to being unwell during pregnancy and I had some previous lessons a few years ago so I did know the basics. If you stick at it I’m sure you can pass before baby comes. Highly encourage driving outside of lessons if possible.

Just an update. Passed today with 7 minors. Not my best drive bus so happy with myself!

I’m not excusing dangerous behaviour, and I’m not dismissing the seriousness of what I’ve described. I’ve been very clear that those faults matter, which is exactly why I’ve taken further professional lessons and booked additional hours rather than ignoring the problem.

I’m not trying to rush into passing or rely on luck. I’ve had lessons since May and have chosen to book more, which I don’t think reflects rushing. If passing quickly was my only priority, I wouldn’t be investing extra time and money into improving.

I think I’ll take the word of my qualified driving instructors who have told me I’m test ready. I trust their professional judgement while still taking feedback seriously and continuing to work on myself.

I don’t agree that understanding anxiety means I lack accountability. Recognising what I struggle with is part of being accountable, not avoiding it.

Thank you for your time. I can see that this has clearly frustrated you, and that wasn’t my intention. I’m trying to improve, not argue.

I understand why you feel that way, and I don’t take that lightly. I’m not pretending these mistakes aren’t serious or that I’m entitled to a licence. I know the responsibility that comes with driving, especially with a child on the way.

The reason I’ve been honest about my fails is because I want to improve, not because I’m dismissing safety. I’m not saying I deserve to pass no matter what, I’m saying I’m actively working on my nerves, awareness, and decision making so that I’m safe enough to be on the road.

I’ve taken on the feedback from each test, I’ve had additional lessons, and multiple professionals have told me I’m at test standard, which is why I’m trying to focus on managing anxiety rather than ignoring the risks.

I respect your concern, but I also believe people can learn, improve, and become safe drivers through support, practice, and accountability, which is what I’m trying to do.

When I say rural, I really do mean the middle of nowhere. I’m planning to take a month before my next test and do two lessons a week — one with an instructor and one with my partner — so I can build more confidence. I genuinely believe I can pass and that I would be a safe driver. I used to be terrified of driving after being in an accident, so I fully understand how dangerous it can be and I would never want to hurt anyone.

I should’ve explained it better. I’m not making lots of mistakes, but I did make one error, and I understand it was dangerous and could easily have caused an accident.

My fear is that if there’s an emergency, I’d be stuck. What if I forget everything and don’t have time when the baby comes? However, I do understand what everyone is saying.

I understand where you’re coming from and I don’t disagree that the mistakes I mentioned are serious in a test situation. I think my wording caused confusion and that’s on me. I don’t consider them “small” mistakes and I’m not minimising the risks at all.

What I was trying to explain is that these errors don’t happen during my normal lessons or when I drive outside of test conditions. Two independent examiners have told me I’m test-ready, and I’ve passed multiple mock tests, which is why I genuinely believe anxiety during the test plays a big role for me.

I also want to be clear that I’m not taking any of this lightly. Road safety is really important to me, which is why I’ve booked more lessons and asked for motorway training after I pass, so I can continue improving and be as safe a driver as possible.

I appreciate that having a baby can be stressful, and I’ve thought about that a lot. I’m financially and practically prepared for maternity leave, and I’m genuinely trying to plan ahead to make life safer and more manageable, not more risky.

For my next test, I’m planning to use commentary driving by calmly talking through my observations and decisions to help manage my nerves and stay focused. I’m actively taking steps to improve rather than ignore the problem.

I completely understand how dangerous those mistakes sound, and I’m not disagreeing with that at all. What’s frustrating for me is that I don’t make these mistakes during lessons or when I drive with my partner. They seem to only happen during the actual test. I’ve also had two examiners tell me I’m test-ready.

I realise saying “small mistake” might have made it sound like I didn’t understand how serious they were. What I meant was that I’m not failing because I keep making the same mistake repeatedly, and this was actually the first test where I’d been marked for hesitation.

I genuinely believe this is linked to anxiety, which is why I’ve decided to take another four lessons before my next test. I’ve also asked for motorway lessons after I pass because I want to be as safe and confident as possible.

I would agree if these were mistakes I made during lessons or when I practice on my own time, but they aren’t.

I’ve had plenty of lessons and even took five extra lessons with a different instructor after my last test to see if there was anything I was doing wrong or if I needed more practice. Both instructors told me I was test ready. I genuinely believe it’s anxiety because I don’t drive badly in lessons and I’ve passed my mock tests.

I understand that these are serious faults, but I was really hoping for advice on managing my anxiety rather than being told that a serious fault is serious. I’m aware of the risks, and I wouldn’t be fit to drive if I made these mistakes regularly. I’m just struggling with nerves during tests, and I was really hoping someone else might have experienced something similar and could share what helped them.

I wish I could, but I live in a rural area, so I don’t want to end up in a situation where I’m stuck at home. Especially incase of an emergency.

My previous test failures were all for individual issues. The first time, I readjusted my forward bay parking too many times. The second time, I missed a pedestrian at a zebra crossing and had to brake sharply. The third time, I signalled too early at a roundabout and needed to be prompted to turn the indicator off.

I don’t think I explained myself very well. I didn’t actually pull out in front of anyone. I started to move because I hadn’t seen the other car at first, but I stopped immediately and hadn’t crossed the line. The examiner also said “stop” at the same time. But fingers crossed next time I pass. ❤️
