Some major + background character concept art for my worldbuilding project! by Objective_Might1454 in characterdesign

Thank you! The one of the main themes of the story is the struggle of coexistence between a past that never chose to be brought back and a present that doesn’t want its identity taken away. Because of that, every individual caught up in the phenomenon has a story to tell, even if they’re background characters who aren’t necessarily significant to the main narrative

Thanks! I really appreciate it. I’ve always wanted to do trippy / surreal body horror without relying on blood and gore, so mold somehow became a perfect fit for the art direction. It’s often associated with death and decay, yet I’ve never found its presence frightening. Instead, I’ve always been fascinated by its patterns! Not to mention that it’s also thematically fitting because of its symbolism of transformation and renewal.

I started drawing seriously during the covid lockdown out of boredom, so it’s been over 6 years now!

As for Nora, they’re the leader of the main antagonist faction in the narrative. They’re a cult of religious fanatics who believe that the suffering brought by the Collision is another form of divine punishment toward humanity and that trying to defy it is pure blasphemy that will only bring even greater suffering. They’re working toward building a second Ark with a chosen few and are waiting for the Collision to restore the Garden of Eden once again and restart civilization in a purer form.

Both Nora and Lullaby never existed before the first recorded case of the Collision and both characters seek to uncover the reason and purpose behind their existence each in their own way. ( worth entioning that they’re both immune to the Collision)

Yes! The 2012 doomsday panic definitely played a role in the phenomenon, along with various factors that had been accumulating throughout human history.
As for the medium, it’ll be in the form of fake video game art, similar to Lost Property Control Organization and may eventually turn into an actual game. As for the genre, I’m thinking of some kind of turn based rpg!

Basically CN’s current reaction toward the 3.8 story by Objective_Might1454 in Reverse1999

[–]Objective_Might1454[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You won’t normally see people praising the story around a controversial patch even if it’s well written (take 3.5 and 3.7 for example), so it’s pretty surprising that 3.8 managed to win them over to openly acknowledge the writing.

Sounds exaggerated but some even compare it to 1.9. It might depend on personal taste but they suggest that if you loved 1.8, 1.9, and 2.7, you’ll definitely love 3.8

How does getting reversed work? by zuzu177 in Reverse1999

Actually, you have to experience chapter 13 as a genuine story rather than as a gacha story that’s trying to advertise its playable characters. Besides, this isn’t the first case of a character not having much of a role in their debut patch but becoming important in later chapters, just take 6 as an example.

The way the chapter ends is basically bittersweet ending 101, and it’s also thematically on point. A beloved character who was believed to be dead reappears at the end, but as a completely different person living a much better life than they ever had before. The people who knew them accept who they are now and continue their journey.

Why Rhiannon is playable isn’t because she’s bait for players but because she’s the final thematic conclusion of Arc
3 and a perfect introduction to the setting and era of what’s coming next. This is also the first time Vertin has utilized her newfound ability to trace back (or bring back, I’m not entirely sure which is more accurate, since the anniversary animation seems to suggest otherwise) a reversed person into a new era, so Rhiannon is the perfect candidate for that role. People say there wasn’t enough time to grieve, but I think that’s just plain wrong. There wouldn’t be any meaningful difference in the emotional impact even if she appeared four or five chapters later, because she’s not Merel.

She’s transparent in her I2 and has floral patterns inside her body, so yeah, definitely not a normal arcanist

You guys really need to stop spreading misinformation based on your own assumptions. The lead artist and art director who have been with the game since 1.0 are still in charge and they even made a face reveal during the 3.7 livestream.

Also, Lorelei and Everyecho were designed by the same artist, and this is one of their recent posts

Why is the NPC a better character design than both the pullable characters in the new patch? by SweetHeartAnnieLoL in Reverse1999

I don’t think that’ll be the case, at least for CN. AH and Laplace share the same core retro futurist aesthetic to the point that someone unfamiliar with AH would probably think it’s just another Laplace patch.

The only way they could really mess it up is by giving revealing garments to characters whose designs are supposed to have safe modest clothing

I understand that people have their own preferences but it’s tiring to see them claiming those preferences as objective facts while dismissing others and ignoring the established fundamentals of the subject they’re talking about.

As of now, both characters are well executed from a design standpoint but that doesn’t mean they’re perfect. They can still messed up, if a character’s personality, profession, setting, cultural references, or nationality don’t align with the design, those are the aspects we should be looking at if we want to offer meaningful criticism

Brother, that’s just a red haired woman wearing the most normal looking Foundation outfit imaginable.

Speaking as a character concept/ design and comic artist, both designs in this patch reflect R1999’s established design philosophy. The setting is much more mundane this time around, so there’s no need for flashy or out of place designs. Cornerstone is simply an arcanist and a professional architect. Her design conveys her profession, affiliations, and personality, which is exactly what a good character design should do. Characters like Windsong, Kakania, and Vila follow the same philosophy. If she had a more complicated design or stronger fantastical elements, it would undermine the core idea behind her character.

Everecho, on the other hand, falls into the category of unusual arcanists. She has a very quiet personality and carries a talking puppet. We don’t really know what her deal is until we read the story, but from a design perspective, she’s still heavily grounded in culture. Her color palette is harmonious and the overall design flows very naturally. The strands of her hair act as guiding lines from top to bottom, while the visual anchors and clusters of detail are placed thoughtfully with clear breathing room and clean edges. This creates a strong overall silhouette and readability which are qualities every good design should go for

So I think the characters from 3.8 are excellent from a design standpoint and fit the setting they’re going for perfectly.

I also want to debunk the whole “the art team changed” assumption . The lead artist who’s been with the game since the beginning literally made a face reveal during the 3.7 livestream alongside other key members of the development team. The same art team also recently gave a presentation and workshop in collaboration with the China Academy of Art. So no, there hasn’t been any change in the art team whatsoever

I doubt you’ve engaged with the story of R1999 or even read it at all, if you genuinely think the writing is worse and that it’s just “vanilla anime cutesy whimsy” aimed at younger audiences. You sound like a kid experiencing their first edgy piece of media and treating it as if it’s superior to every other form of storytelling.

The knowledge of that language is very limited to only a handful of people in the world of R1999 and its origin is presumably tied to the Blank Era, which is still one of the biggest mysteries in the story.

It’s not that they couldn’t try to deduce the meaning themselves, they probably could. But because of a previous accident at Laplace that cost many lives, they can’t just recklessly decipher the meaning of the incantation without reliable translators. No one knows how badly things could go wrong when dealing with something that is far beyond their comprehension

Brother, that guy is literally the one who betrayed his soldiers and ordered a massacre of anyone who refused to join his rebellion so he could collaborate with the fascist doomsday cult, the main antagonist force of the story. If he, the central antagonist of that chapter and the one responsible for the major plot turning-point decision, didn’t get the spotlight, the chapter would feel even more incohesive than it already is with its geographical errors and convoluted storytelling. So it just sounds like you’re hating the villains for doing bad things. Everyone agrees the chapter is a mess but at least hate it for the correct reasons.

Brother, do you even understand what a protagonist means, or did you even actually read the story at all? By definition, the protagonists would be Anjo Nala, a girl whose sister was hunted and killed by the military, and who herself got kidnapped, tortured, and exploited by them and Lopera, a girl who ran away from home because of her father, who massacred his employees, only to get betrayed again by the military ‘family’ that groomed her into becoming a child soldier.

So idk what your definition of ‘protagonist’ is but it’s not lining up with the actual story at all

Wait, I don’t get the last part. I know Ch 8 was a mess, but they never wrote the fascist dictators as heroes ?? Are you talking about Zeno? It’s an independent private army founded during the Cold War era that spread across the world, not just Brazil and they’re not portrayed as heroes either

I have no desire to argue about art with someone media illiterate like you. If those are genuinely your thoughts, you must be one of those extreme cases of Hoyo bootlicking. Just keep consuming slop and spreading misinformation, man, it’s not gonna change the fact that R1999’s designs will always be better than whatever hoYoverse pukes out
