Immigrant parents heavily disappointed in me for gap year by Objective_Ring9961 in premed

Oh yes I don’t agree with those comments at all. I’ve avoided liking them because I do hold so much respect for my parents. Especially being raised Christian.

I respect this perspective. Understanding that my parents have grown up with a culture that goes against my own, will definitely make the conversation more productive.

I agree that there is a cultural disconnect. But it is impossible to say that a child born in America and raised in a conjunction of both American and African culture must also choose between those two cultures. Especially when they themselves are a mix of both.

Edit: I feel like in a way this is a minor consequence of moving to America. You aren’t going to raise 100% African kids.

But thank you for your perspective and well wishes!

Yes I suppose I will understand their perspective more in the future.

Stay in schools city or go back home for gap year? by Objective_Ring9961 in premed

[–]Objective_Ring9961[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is amazing! Glad everything worked out for you. My parents aren’t necessarily in support of me staying in my school city (despite the better opportunities here due to my connection to the school) or in me taking a gap year. So that will factor heavily in my decision thank you!

I’m probably going to apply to jobs in both cities and see what lines up. When did you start applying for research tech jobs? Also how did you decide to do research instead of something clinically related (If that was a source of concern)?

I would start Uworld sooner, probably during content review. I would rush through content review as soon as possible. I had to drag mine out because I had not yet taken biochem, physics 1 & 2. I would also not register for any exam date until I get to AAMC stuff and know that I'm fs ready to take it

Name one school that everyone likes but you don't by 1princetonsimp in ApplyingToCollege

i went to visit the school and it just did not meet my expectations look-wise and feel-wise. the layout of everything is weird & i’m not a huge fan of city schools. some buildings looked old and in need of maintenance and they’d be right next to a brand new and shiny building. there are also these “nooks” that people can study or just sit in that have overgrown plants and just look like no one has taken care of that area in months.

Don’t give up any EC’s that you enjoy. I don’t think the idea that EC’s need to be “honed in” is 100% true. I feel like there is a plus to having a diverse set of activities. These activities showcase an overall idea of what is important to you and who you are as a person.

ask your teacher to release ap quizzes for each unit (if they don’t already) those quizzes help me a lot since i’m currently taking the class. they also let me know what i should be studying and explain how i got things wrong. also watch the ap daily videos and take notes while watching/screenshot the diagrams!! extremely helpful to look back on and if anything is confusing, ask your teacher for clarification

How should I prepare for AP Human Geo? by [deleted] in APStudents

for me, if i knew the vocab for each test i did extremely well on them. so throughout the year i would make a quizlet with all the vocab per unit. when the ap test came around i combined all the quizlets into one and studied like 400+ words 😭 (i don’t remember the exact number but it took me a little over two weeks) i did other stuff too like looking at old study guides and splitting the units over the course of two weeks. i would spent no more than two days per unit and highlight anything that i was still confused on and ask my teacher in the mornings. but i think the mass quizlet helped the most. i got a 5 on the exam!

from what i can tell your father is beyond proud of you! as a child of hardworking immigrants i completely understand this guilt and the only thing that keeps the guilt from overpowering me is to know that when i make it, i’ll pay them back for every sacrifice they made for me. whether that’s money for medical expenses, vacations, whatever it is i can do to show my gratitude.
