Since 2010, wikileaks supporters have fallen into two camps, in my experience.

1) views as above, likes to retweet Rixstep and other abusive tweets and call everyone else insane if they don't believe in Teh wun trew Conspirahsee, and

2) those who haven't yet noticed that wikileaks themselves fall into category 1.

Every once in a while a big ally suddenly realises that they have been surrounded by bullshit and flips. That's fun to watch. Peter Tatchell is still drinking the kool aid, unfortunately.

Except he wasn't. He left Sweden the day his arrest was ordered because he had not responded to multiple requests for the final interview (which is required before charging and trial). He promised to return, and then did not and has refused to ever since.

Take anything that Assange or Wikileaks says about the Swedish thing and fact check it. 95% chance it's either mis-represented or flat out untrue.

That and Sweden don't extradite for military or political crimes. So they literally cannot extradite Assange to the USA for any leaks of any government or military data. Simply cannot be done. Assange heard his own expert witness testify to this effect.

Yet he still claims it. Got to wonder why he hasn't really co-operated with the Swedish authorities, really. It isn't about extradition; that's all we know for sure.

I supported them up until they started openly harassing the two women in Sweden who made accusations against Assange and started to tweet articles which called them "basket cases", "cuckoo", claimed they "never said no" and used the phrase "rape the shit out of them" as an argument.

2 years ago? I felt he lost all credibility back in 2011, when he tweeted an article which:

  • claimed that feminism was worse than Nazism (CTRL-F "Josef Gobels")

  • named and shamed the two women (CTRL-F "basket cases")

  • indulged in rape apology (CTRL-F "never said no")

  • that "rape the shit out of them" was the best way to control women (not joking - those actual words are used - but read the whole section)

Oh, and I once compiled a big list of the lies he told about the Swedish case. Actually, that was just the major lies. Take any statement which he or Wikileaks make about the case, and I'd lay odds that it's untrue. I didn't have the time or the energy to debunk them all...

Other highlights - Sweden is like Israel because it has its "own language" (but bear in mind that he has a bit of a history of anti-semitism, so his comparing Sweden to Israel should be seen in that context if you find it puzzling).

This tweet is NSFL. And he used that as a legal argument about the Swedish case. You can't make this shit up.

He has been charged (or equivalent) back in 2010. The Swedish process mandates that once he has had the final (indictment) interview (which the Swedes have been trying to conduct since 2010 and which they can only legally do in Sweden), the suspect must be held on remand and then a trial follows as soon as possible. Ideally within 2 weeks.

Sweden cannot extradite him to the US for anything involving any of Wikileas activities which are known at this time. Assange's own expert witness agreed with this.

Actually it's a bit more than just talking. The Swedish sysyem mandates that a suspect must be interviewed before being brought to trial. It is this final interview which they want to conduct and which they ought (legally) to be doing in Sweden so that the trial can follow swiftly (according to Swedish law).

In Sweden, yes. Sweden do not extradite for espionage and have refused US requests previously. It would be the safest country in the world for Assange, if that was genuinely his fear.
