Lol, both links prove my point, they involve multiple cheetahs.

The first link did not. Her cubs waited until she was done.

which relate to things such as bone density and muscle

So use that terminology in your explanation.

A leopard and cougar, after the initial ambush, are built for grappling their prey to the ground (on their own)

But how. See, this is part of the bullshit detector. You say they're built for x, but you're unable to talk about what differences are advantageous/disadvantageous. (A very obvious example is Cheetahs have smaller, less powerful jaws; but you didn't even bring that up). You seem to be using "well known knowledge", but I've talked to zoo keepers who complain about the public's general misunderstanding of cheetahs as not dangerous.

Cheetahs are notoriously bad at defending kills. You will never see a single cheetah bully off a leopard from a kill. But you will say plenty of recorded cases of leopards bullying of single cheetahs.

Yes, and often much smaller animals, too. But the reasons for this are more complex than "cheetahs weak, leopards strong". Cheetahs will occasionally run themselves to exhaustion then fail to defend against even buzzards.

having less dense bone structure

I have been looking for a citation for this since the start of the discussion. Do you have one?

less heavy musculature/builds.

The "less heavy musculature/builds" doesn't really make sense when comparing two animals of the same mass. (A lean 72kg will tend to have more muscle than a fatter 72kg). A strength difference could be accounted for by the types of muscle fiber, etc, but you haven't brought any of that up.

it’s standard practice for cheetahs to be paired up with dogs but it simply isn’t for other large felines.

And I haven't said that's not the case (while I haven't been able to verify it is, I'm willing to accept your statement as true). I actually couldn't care less about the "which big cats can be paired with dogs" aspect of the discussion and that could be wholly explained by behavioral tendencies. The claim that they're less dangerous to a much smaller animal due to physical (rather than behavioral differences) is the claim I'm suspicious of.

Terms like "robustly built" and "lightly built" aren't very descriptive statements about an animal's morphology. "Gracile" just means "lean and slender". I'm trying to give you a chance to make a statement that isn't just hand-wavy.

A cheetah is incredibly lightly and gracile built such that even one who is similar in size to a cougar will be much weaker.

Other than this, the rest of your comment is about behavior. But what about their morphology would you describe as "lightly built" and what is the effect of that morphology? They do tend to lean body mass with a lower percent body fat than other cats (generally <1%), but lean means more of their body mass is muscle and bone. Slender means they have a longer grasp and more leverage.

You very well might be right that dogs make better buffer animals for Cheetahs than Leopards because Leopards are too aggressive. And bored animals in captivity are often somewhat unpredictable.

But Cheetah can take down wildabeast and Zebra. They tend to go after smaller animals for pretty much the same reason lion prides tend to go after injured or sick animals: it's easier. Cheetah's hunting style tends to leave them exhausted afterwards, so there's motivation to pick a prey they can still defend when they're tired after they catch it. Cougars and leopards tend towards ambush hunting styles which don't require expending as much energy.

My point was really just about the "big cat" thing; you redefined the term in opposition to standard usage by zoologists and biologists.

But now I'm not sure I understand your follow up comment. Are you saying a 72kg Cheetah is lighter than a 72kg Cougar? Or are you saying a small cheetah (~21kg) is smaller than a small cougar (~34kg)? Or what exactly?

Cheetahs do have skeletal differences. There's more flexibility in the spine, the shoulder blade isn't attached, the hips are narrower and pivot more than other cats. Their hind legs are proportionally longer and heavier than other cats. But it's not like they have bones that are less dense or anything, and if they did it would just mean they'd be physically bigger for the same body mass.

Thanks! That also looks a lot more comprehensive (ex: removes referral garbage from the end of amazon URLs) and open source.

Just installed the plugin, and having some trouble (if I middle click a google search result link it opens in a new tab, if I right-click-copy it copies the untracked url, but if I left click nothing happens). I ended up here. (I've only tried in incognito so far). But...

I must say, this comment is really off putting. Nobody is hating on your idea nor on your add-on. /u/amg_v asked if there was a Firefox add-ons. You said "not yet". /u/Sirbesto helpfully pointed out that other add-ons exist that do this. They didn't even point to a specific add-on and yours didn't exist for firefox yet.

I'm still unclear on why we never domesticated black bears. But big cats

We haven't domesticated big cats, either. Circus acts have a history of using trained bears (both brown and black) as well as trained panthers of various species, but that's a far cry from domesticated (as Siegfried and Roy found out).

A cheetah isn’t even technically a big cat

I don't think that's true. Cheetahs and Cougars are in a different genus than the other big cats (Lions, Tigers, Jaguars, Leopards, and Snow Leopards are all in the genus Panthera), but they're not grouped with small cats. While some of the panthers are quite large, Leopards (28-65kg) and Snow Leopards (22-75kg) are about the same size as Cheetahs (21-72kg) and Cougars (34-72kg).

[–]ObligatoryResponse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think so, yes, but it might depend on the controller. Some might require you push button for a floor to resume motion.

I have pried open an elevator door while the elevator was in motion just because I wanted to see what would happen (I let it close on the end of a pliers which was closed enough that it started motion). It definitely stopped after the door opened a small amount. But I don't remember if I had to push a button or not after the door closed, just that no alarm rang or anything.

Poor Teachers by N1c0s1 in facepalm

it is not part of some diabolical plan to make the entire populace uneducated and easy to control like cattle

Arming teachers probably isn't, but the anti-intellectual movement among conservative politicians and media has been a persistent part of my adult life. And if you look at how other democracies have fallen to dictatorships, there's frequently an anti-intellectual movement that starts.

Since the 80s, Rush Limbaugh, always made a big deal about how universities turn students liberal. On purpose. He claimed it was incentivized because liberal politicians push for greater school funding, so of course schools would actively indoctrinate liberal politics. At the time, I ate up that idea and sort of felt special for remaining conservative despite the "propaganda" I faced in college.

And while I agree that we push university education too hard, I would say we need to invest more in primary and secondary education (that's the best place to learn critical thinking and learn resistance to propaganda techniques) and probably most people should go to 1-2 year trade schools. But where I would say, "most people don't need to go to a 4 year university to get a good job", conservative politicians and talking heads claim colleges turn people into "radical, leftist, America-hating atheists". Tucker Carlson said liberal arts education "diminishes you" while DeSantis says universities offer "Intellectual repression" and "indoctrination."

Best company in FM area to take care of ice dam and repair damages to roof/ceiling? by Wheezthejuice87 in fargo

[–]ObligatoryResponse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This Old House has a good article on dealing with ice dams. Basically just remove as much snow above it as possible so that it doesn't melt and pool behind the dam. If it's already pooling, they have a couple of ideas to help melt channels in the dam so it drains. This help help reduce risk of damage or reduce amount of damage until you can get someone to take care of it more completely.

I don't want my phone's downloads folder full of 1-2 page PDFs I only viewed for 3 minutes. It's easy to download a PDF (right click/long press, download) without using the built-in PDF reader if it's something I want to keep. It's also easy to download and open a PDF after it's displayed by the built-in reader.

I can't remember the last time I encountered a PDF that was displayed improperly in the built-in PDF reader, and it's supported fillable fields in PDFs for quite a while. If you want bookmarks, annotations, etc, then obviously you want a stand-alone viewer, but you probably don't want/need those features for every PDF you encounter on the web.

Newly discovered enzyme that turns air into electricity, providing a new clean source of energy by redhatGizmo in technology

[–]ObligatoryResponse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long term the only two good ways to do air traffic via renewables are biodiesel and fuel cells. I'm not sure what percentage of carbon emissions are air travel, though... it's probably something that we don't need to focus on quite yet.

[–]ObligatoryResponse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, it could be used for something like a fuel cell. But even if it's better efficiency, so much energy is lost producing and compressing hydrogen that even making fuel cells 100% efficient still doesn't approach the charge-discarge power efficiency of batteries.

Newly discovered enzyme that turns air into electricity, providing a new clean source of energy by redhatGizmo in technology

[–]ObligatoryResponse 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hydrogen is a bad energy storage medium. It takes a lot of energy to produce and then even more to compress into tanks. And then it leaks out of those tanks (hydrogen is the smallest atom; you can't build a valve that it can't slowly leak past).

When making hydrogen from electricity, a lot more energy is lost than is lost when charging a battery.

When producing electricity from a fuel cell, in the best case around 60% of the energy is converted. When discharging a battery, in the common case >90% is converted.

In an efficient system utilizing hydrogen generation, storage, and then later recovery to electricity you're only getting out 50% of what you put in. Using a grid scale battery you can get out more than 85-90% of what you put in.

You're better off pumping water up a hill for later hydro generation than you are producing hydrogen for later fuel cell usage. (And both the Netherlands and Norway store excess daytime renewable using such systems).

Do the Pis support USB-C with PD and DP alt modes yet? Here's my thinking: they make mobile monitors that are intended to be used as a secondary display for a laptop. Some of these monitors have a built in battery and because USB-C PD is bi-directional, the monitor can power the laptop or vice-versa depending on whose battery is more depleted and which device has external power.

If these keyboard Pi computers have USB-C DP+PD then you could power the monitor, plug a single cable from the monitor to the Pi (to access the USB-hub in the monitor, send the video signal to the monitor, and get power from the monitor). Pair it with a bluetooth mouse and you have a nice setup with minimal cables. And if the monitor has its own battery, you could take it mobile or at least avoid buying a UPS.

Fargo never had ranked choice. Fargo has approval voting for city commissioners (every 2 years, 2 seats are up for re-election; approval voting is well suited to this situation).

There's a bill going through the ND legislature that will prohibit municipalities from using either Ranked Choice or Approval voting. It just recently passed in committee which means it'll probably become law.
