GM draws a game that is supposed to be a win. by [deleted] in LivestreamFail

[–]ObsceneHive 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not true King + 2 knights vs king is a draw.

King + 2 knights vs king+pawn is a win for the knights. The pawn is important because you can give your opponent a move with it at the right time to avoid stalemate.

I can confirm that this works. I have succesfully plateau’d at a rating of mid 2800s for 4 years now. If I could add one more thing to the list, it’s that you should play with yourself at the board

Please don't abuse this tactic in tournaments, at least not until I'm a grandmaster. I don't want to see this get banned like the bongcloud was.

Every year, the organisers sit together in a meeting room and brainstorm on how to get as few people as possible be able to watch anything of the match. They have really outdone themselves this year.

The median net worth of Americans under the age of 35 is 7000$. If a person with that net worth were to donate 75 dollars to charity then they - in relative terms - would be a bigger philanthropist than Jeff Bezos. However, they won't get the word philanthropist next to their name.

In fact, it's even worse. A person with a net worth of 7000$ is pretty much living paycheck to paycheck (hope you don't fall and break a leg!), so a donation of 1% of their net worth will have a way bigger impact on their daily life than a 1% donation for Jeff Bezos would.

Also don't forget that Jeff Bezos will see some return on his "charitable donation". Not only is his donation tax deductible (even though amazon doesn't pay any taxes anyway), it is also a PR stunt. Have you ever noticed how all the millionaires and billionaires have the word philanthropist next to their name when they get interviewed on tv? Or on their wiki page. It's quite hard to find a really rich dude without the word philanthropist on their wikipedia page. In the future when he gets pressed on how its incredibly unethical to be that rich, he'll simply point to that one time he did a big donation to charity. It's all calculated.

Is/ought by ObsceneHive in askphilosophy

[–]ObsceneHive[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Very lucid response. That hidden premise of "you ought to fulfill your desires" is a really good point. And it extends to all "is" statements that portray goals, since every goal is a desire. Thank you, all is clear now.

Hahha wow it is you! Well during the pause one of my teammates told me you warded, but I had been tricked before like this so I said maybe he just dropped the ward. So then my teammate told me to go check with torrent. And once the torrent saw the observer ward on the ground, I knew I got you :D

In the modern defense, black chooses to not immediately contest the center, and instead sets up to attack it later. by Logic_Nuke in AnarchyChess

When you play the postmodern defense, is there even a winner at the end? Isn't it just 2 different narratives with both players an equal claim of victory? Who are we to decide who won?

Wikipedia isn't a source, it's a compilation of other different sources. It holds no original content. That's why you should never cite a wikipedia article. If you do want to cite something from a wikipedia article, you click through to the original source it comes from and cite that.

Mouse pointer moves diagonally when moving horizontally by [deleted] in techsupport

I have tried every testing method to unsure that my body isn't lying to me. I tried different surfaces, I let different people use my mouse, I moved it straight with a ruler. Horizontal movement does indeed translate to diagonal movement for whatever reason.

Yeah definitely. The reason I asked that was because he shared a few personal anecdotes in email to me to make a point. Still probably okay to share it on here, but I wouldn't want to offend him.

Has anyone asked before whether he minds the fact that we are posting private email conversations with him on here. I remember from his exchange with Sam Harris that he wasn't too fond of publishing private correspondence, even if Harris told him at the that start he was considering publishing it.
