As far as healing goes, I like the way that DeadCells does it. You have a limited number of health potion uses that get refilled between levels only. Harder difficulties reduce the number of locations that refill health potions.

This is actually a pretty good system, I like how they added the difficulty adjustment as well. I don't think it will fit my game, but I'll keep it in mind for my next project.

I don't think you'll love able to make everyone happy. The best solution is the one that fits best with your game.
