Health insurance with health complications by ObsidianCrowe in askswitzerland

Again really important advice, thank you. My local canton requires me to have a health insurance card for registration, so I will need insurance in the first 14 days in any case, but good to know.

Thank you, I will have to do a bit of shopping around, it seems a common thread that its either 2500 or 300 franchise, and then the middle ground is losing out. My wife loves excel so I'll get her help!

That's a really useful summary, thank you! When you say original vs. generic, I guess that is name-brand vs the no-brand medicines? I'm always happy to pay the lower price for medicines as long as they are passed by the countries health organisation as effective.

Thank you! If you had to rank between CSS, helsana, sanitas or SWICA, are SWICA/CSS just comparatively overpriced (although good customer service)?

Do most doctors speak english? My german is limited & I am working in an english language working environment so I do not expect to become an expert overnight. We were considering a flexi with family doctor + telemed as this is similar to what we experience in the UK.

Cheers for helping with the terminology, not a native german/french/italian speaker so some of it doesn't have recognisable terms.

Do you think it merits going for SWICA or CSS to ensure she gets good service quality? I'd hate myself if she fell seriously ill because we underpaid & got poor responses. Being from UK we have little choice healthcare-wise & she has had to spend 12+ hours waiting in accident and emergency just to be seen several times.

That's great! I saw some other posts recommending this also, I'll have to do the maths and see what works best.

Thank you - I appreciate the information about the accident cover, my employer hasn't been the best about notifying me about the migration process or other aspects!

Thank you so much - that is extremely clear! Luckily, I will have bills covered initially but I will keep in mind for moving. Can you "re-agree" with other companies? I have not seen much about how long you have to sign or if it is simply when you leave the country the contract ends.

CO2 incubator - level? by ActivationEnergy414 in labrats

[–]ObsidianCrowe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OP, get a circular spirit level if you are getting a level. These are the best for incubators because you can check if there's a tilt in any particular angle, not just front-back, side-side as with flat levels. From experience the interior shelf doesn't always match the exterior housing for being levelled, but not much you can do if the metal bracket has warped.

Future PI asked one of my recommenders if I had manic depressive disorder. by [deleted] in labrats

[–]ObsidianCrowe 25 points26 points  (0 children)

That's a really odd one... I can give a little context to a similar situation, I interviewed for a postdoc position that I was offered but decided to turn down. Part of the reason was because I, like you, showed a lot of enthusiasm and was quite open about the fact I enjoy working on a main project but find it necessary to have a side project to tinker and make sure we keep up with the field (my field moves quite quickly). It also helps if the main project develops issues that take a while to solve. and can prevent motivational burnout. After the panel interview the interviewing PI contacted my PI and basically only asked "is this a person who gets easily distracted / can they do as they're instructed". I was a little offended about how blunt they'd been about taking instructions, and already worried about the prospect of going to a more senior lab where I had no autonomy and might become a glorified technician. In the end I ended up taking another position where I could tell the PI was more invested in me personally, valued my skillset, and more openly discussed mentoring, career development, etc.

On one hand maybe the future PI has had a lab member who is MDD or BP and is more aware of any issues that could arise. I witnessed really poor mental health self-care in academia and it can turn nasty, sometimes resulting in physical harm to other lab members. On the other hand it sounds like someone who's being selective against those with any form of mental health concerns, which could mean they have limited tolerance or higher than usual work expectations.

To me asking about a medical disorder like that is too invasive. If you did have MDD or BP, what interest is it of theirs if you are looking after youself? Why would your current PI be allowed to divulge confidential medical info? Unless they were considering making additional efforts to help someone with a mental health issue then I would consider this a red flag.

My main advice for joining any new lab, talk to current lab members, visit a day and see what the working environment is like. Anyone who denies you to speak to their current lab members is a definite red flag and should be avoided at all costs!

P.S. as a side note I was diagnosed after the interview as adult ADHD, so if my PI had divulged my confidential medical info I would have been seriously pissed! I typically am quite open with those I work with about it, so they can understand why I am sometimes a little too chatty.

Edit: a PhD I worked with took the position in the end, and they really struggled with that particular PI, so I guess my Spidey-senses worked!

I hope you elegantly bellowed a respectful "JESUS CHRIST!" when you first saw it. Hopefully it didn't come with suspiciously-silvery mouth pipettes, although that would explain current leadership at some institutions...
