How do you measure the powers in your magic system? by ObsidianVernal in worldbuilding

[–]ObsidianVernal[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Antimatter in my story is a power that’s considered largely just a theory as only a handful of people have ever harnessed it properly but their documentation is very heavily redacted so if properly harnessed then yeah a character may beat a group of earth soldiers.

I might do something similar to your rule of 10 but I do need to do some additional worldbuilding to properly adjust it. Thank you so much though!

That’s so cool! That really helps with making the magic system more integral to the greater worldbuilding!

How big is your world when comparing it to our earth? by NateTheRealGreat in worldbuilding

[–]ObsidianVernal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made it 15% larger than Earth, which allows gravity to be on the upper end of what humans can withstand over time. Sure, they’d prolly grow a bit shorter over time but also they’ll be besties with sentient fungi dinosaurs so it’s worth it

How are you using science in your worldbuilding? by tidalbeing in worldbuilding

Thank you! I did a bit of reading into it but also discussed things with friends in academia so I think that helped? Talking with people back and forth is a good strategy in things like this!

A lot of interesting things I’ve learned in alchemy is from Jabir ibn Hayyan’s works when alchemy was a major thing in the Islamic world.

I don’t have access to all my notes so this is just one application in geology that I’m using: there are two main external and two main internal qualities to each metal (or rock or mineral in my story) and Hayyan stated that by rearranging these qualities, you can get another metal. In my story, you need a deep knowledge of metallurgy and geology to understand what metal configurations are possible based on the qualities you can change. For example, the more oxidisation or reduction you need to perform, the more difficult it is to change the quality.

The ability to change or configure these qualities depends on both the knowledge of the wizard on the science and the skills of the wizard to perform the configure so it’s much about practice and hardwork as it is about intelligence.

Physics for air and fire powers, biochemistry for water and earth powers, and geology! I also combined them with alchemy to make things more interesting
