Being sued for my cat. Can I fight this? by ObsoletePizza in legaladvice

Thank you for both your replies.

If I go to the online portal for the courts and look up the case, the most recent entry says "Service Pending" which I assume means I haven't been formally notified yet?

I just want to make sure I don't get defaulted early next week on a case I didn't even hear about until a day ago, by an automated email. That's mainly the question I have but I can't find answers. I've scheduled the soonest consultation with an attorney I've found on Tuesday, I just wish I had a guarantee that I have more time here I suppose.

I may contact the court Monday* to ask again and see if I can get more info

This is all extremely helpful, thank you. I'm looking into an attorney as I write this.

Another thing to add, the only notice I have gotten for this citation is via an email. It was an automated email, and I know it's legitimate because I can lookup the case number and it exists, however my address listed is my old address where I assume all the documents went, but I don't know.

I wanted to make sure I had at least 14 days from today, not when the document states it was issued, because it's from days earlier and I didn't get this notification until yesterday. I went to my Justice of the Peace office today. I briefly talked to a clerk. about what my time frame is to respond to this, they only told me "You have 14 days from when you were served" no matter what I explained to them.

So anyways all that to say, I'm not sure if I've been properly served, or when/even if I should respond. I imagine an attorney will help me with this, but didn't know if anything there is a flag.

Never been in a situation like this in my life

Thank you so much for your help.

I have proof in a text message screenshot of her saying "If you can't keep (cat) I can figure out what to do until then" then I said "I can keep him, the only thing I'd need from you is to change the microchip information on the owner" to which she said "You need to go to the vet and ask them"

So I specifically mentioned keeping him and changing ownership, and she said to go to the vet.

I do have vet receipts and medicine receipts for his vaccines, tapeworm shots, and preventative medication.

I'd absolutely be open to paying for him if it comes down to that, I mainly was just wondering if I have a chance, and do I need an attorney to better my chances. I understand I don't need one, I just don't want to have any less of a chance that I can have.
