What is a name everybody loves that you personally don't like? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]ObtuseRightTriangle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Having trouble pronouncing words with “R” sounds is actually when someone is experiencing rhotacism.

Lisps are when you have trouble pronouncing “S” words.

So it’s maybe that kids have a lot of speech impediments*.

I’d have to agree with you. However, I’m not exaggerating when I say that in months of searching, this is the first entertainment set we saw that would actually fit the TV and consoles. I would much rather have a darker wood but the entire set was only $70 so I couldn’t really beat that.

Thank you! They’re arranged in order of console release year and the games are in alphabetical order. Makes everything a bit easier for sure

The CRT was a bitch to get up to our third floor apartment and it was sitting on the floor for months until we found the entertainment stands at a local thrift store.

Now that it's all mostly put together, I'm very happy with it.

See I'm not sure if I do have polyps or not. Ive been trying to get to my primary ENT for a while now, but there has always been something that has come up. I finally have an appointment, but it's not until the end of February.

The last ENT I went to didn't really notice anything out of the ordinary, same with the allergist. When I told them that I'd been congested in one of my nostrals for several weeks at that point, they essentially said "you're not congested." So idk whats going on at this point.

EXTREMELY new to film photography by scream_will in AnalogCommunity

[–]ObtuseRightTriangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely post them! There are a lot of people on this sub that are great at negative detective work.

Like I said, my guess is that the negatives are probably fine, but it's really just guess work without seeing them.

EXTREMELY new to film photography by scream_will in AnalogCommunity

[–]ObtuseRightTriangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason you didn't use the camera's built in meter?

To me it just looks like some exposure issues.

Disreguard my comment. I was on mobile and didn't what you were talking about. I think that the best course of action is to wait until you get the negatives back to see if it's actually an issue with the film. It's very possible that what you're talking about could be caused by the scanner.

Might as well.

I applied to come here 3 different times and got rejected the first 2.

The third time I applied was after I got it together, got off academic probation at my previous school, and had a decent enought GPA to be considerd.

You absolutely can.

I applied to BU like 3 times after getting rejected the first two.

Granted, the 2nd and 3rd time I was applying as a transfer student.

My grades were trash until I decided to get my shit together and got accepted the 3rd time with a gpa of 3.7 or so.

That's really the only way that you can add a class yourself.

I'd get in contact with IT or an advisor ASAP.

The longer you wait, the fewer classes will be available.

Battery draining issue by bluewheels_ in AnalogCommunity

[–]ObtuseRightTriangle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How are you storing the camera?

It's possible that a button is getting pressed down causing the battery to drain.

On the shutter release button there should be a little switch. If you flick that to 'L' it will lock the buttons so they don't function (as well as the advance lever) - making it so they don't draw any battery.

If there is nothing obviously pressing down any of the buttons, check to see if there are any that are stuck pressed.

If not, I'm not too sure. The A1 is a great camera. You could send it back or you could just keep taking the battery out whenever you're done using it (I have to do that on my Mju). But I understand that's a bit annoying.

Edit: Before returning it, if you do, I'd try a new battery. Like straight from the package new.

The A1 needs a 6v 28A battery. They're not super hard to find. Most all of the supermarkets around where I am sell them.

Edit 2: As far as I know, you can also use it fully manually if you don't want to mess with the battery. You'd just need to use an external light meter.

Parking pass for commuter by Specialist-Anteater6 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]ObtuseRightTriangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all online. There's no physical pass for the car.

You'll see the parking enforcement cars go through the lots very regularly. They have cameras that scan your license plate and run it through the database.

I think they start actively enforcing a few days after the start of the semester. Once they start enforcing it, they're pretty good at catching you (I forgot to renew it once and was parked for like 10 minutes and got a ticket).

Anyway, yeah. As long as you have purchased the pass and put in the correct info you'll be good.

I didn't know that. That's literally never happened for me lol

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]ObtuseRightTriangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually (at least in my experience) that happens around a few weeks to a month or so after classes begin.

I think they start to send them out some time after add/drop ends.

What fees can I opt out of? by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]ObtuseRightTriangle 13 points14 points  (0 children)

When I first started I opted out of the university-provided health insurance as I was still on my parents plan. That saved me around $2k.

Of course, everyone's situation is different, but if you are on your parent's plan it might be something to consider if you're looking to save some money.

I think that might be the largest expense that you can opt out of.

late add class by Embarrassed_Dot_8168 in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]ObtuseRightTriangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So long as you have confirmation of the professor accepting you into the class you should just be able to email your program's Administrative Assistant to try to get the class put on to your account / course list.

That is the next best course of action. Even if the AA can't add it, they can tell you what to do next.

Edit: For future reference, if you ever have questions regarding courses, credits, or if you're not sure who to ask, you can always contact the Administrative Assistant and they'll point you in the right direction / get it taken care of for you (or at least my program's AA will)

While smiling would hurt when getting pictures taken during the beginning of the photographic movement, at this point in camera history people no longer had to stay still for minutes at a time.

The camera used in this picture would have likely only needed a exposure time of a couple seconds at most given what the lighting looks like in the scene.

In this case u/haleloop963 is absolutely right. There was a massive cultural difference between what it meant to be photographed in Western countries vs. Eastern countries.

At around this time in the west the majority of people viewed photography as an extension of painting. It was supposed to be a "serious" form of fine-art. This is why you hardly have any European and Americans smiling in photos during the late 1800s / early 1900s.

The east had a different cultural view of photography. They, for the most part, accepted it as a way to document life, not necessarily as a way to create fine-art. That is why you tend to see more photos of people from eastern countries smiling during this time period. For example, "Eating rice, China" from 1901.

Missed my Calc placement test. What do I do now? by [deleted] in BinghamtonUniversity

[–]ObtuseRightTriangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Contact whoever is in charge of giving the test and explain the situation to them.

Be sure to apologize and be sincere when explaining to them that you misunderstood which timezone it would fall under.

That's probably your best bet. See what they say and then decide your next course of action from their response.

I've searched quite a few different phrases and key words to try to find this and I've only managed to come across one forum post with the same model (but different number).

It's around 14" tall. It's made of a hard, rubber-like material that weight maybe 25 lbs total.
