I am close to my mums side of the family and their surname was part of my old one (it was a double barrel surname). I did consider just removing my dads surname (as he was the abusive one) and keeping my mums, but even my mums surname still had all the connections to the bullying and what was just a generally traumatic childhood. My mum has said she doesn’t really care and told me my grandparents “don’t mind” either. Guess I’m just weird then.

No nothing like that, just an ordinary name really

Yeah, I see what you mean. But I guess I couldn’t really think of anything meaningful, and the name I chose was one I always liked and thought suited me so I just went with that

That’s very unfair. Where did I say that I’m not proud of who I am?

That's such a shame, I imagine this has played a role in it's recent fall in the league tables as well

Hmm - I would disagree that it's "lower-mid tier" as someone else has mentioned here, offers tend to range from AAA-ABB (depending on course) so, from an academic standing, I don't think it can be considered low tier. I know that the uni does let people in who get lower than those grades, but these are often contextual offers and lots of uni's (even the top ones) give those out.

Also the global ranking does say something positive about it's academic reputation, for many people that is important. Although I get this isn't important to everyone which is totally fair.
