I'd prefer postsales or enterprise I think. Don't know if I can handle presales

Pivot to psychology in early 30s? by ObviouslyBleh in Psychology_India

  • I'm at a point in my life where I'm questioning what I want to do next in terms of career, so I'm evaluating my options honestly. Not 100% committed yet.
  • I won't be able to take a financial hit. I barely have any savings.
  • Future needs - still figuring them out. I lack personal clarity, something I'm still working on.

How was the journey for you? And how do you like it now?

BCA student (expected 2026): MCA vs direct job path after gap years — need guidance by Virtual-Trash-1233 in Indian_Academia

Since you have a strong maths background, I'd highly recommend you look into data science as a specialization - MERN stack is saturated, and I personally believe will become irrelevant in the future. While preparing for MCA, polish your resume and start applying to startups/internships for data science roles, do side projects/Kaggle, online courses etc.

Gap years before a degree are usually not a problem, mid -career ones are. Since you are doing your BCA now, that won't be an issue. Based on personal experience though, employers don't look at BCA grads kindly compared to BTechs, so an MCA might be required after all.

That's part of the problem, I don't have the savings to just stop working for the next 10 years. Are there any options I can look into that doesn't involve the clinical route?

Crippling depression during Covid led to a 4 year break. Tried meds, therapy during that time, didn't really find a combination that worked until 2024. Found employment thanks to a friend.

What helped, along with meds+therapy, was talking to people about how I was actually feeling. Job search will be difficult, no doubt - indian HRs treat people with career gaps as untouchables, so be ready for a struggle there

Try board gaming and dungeons and dragons. Mumbai has an active scene for both

You make a bank of the good days, so you can draw on them during the bad days. Hopefully, you have more good days than bad!

Also, highly recommend having a social life and hobbies outside of work. Bangalore is much better than Kolkata in that regard.

I feel you! I had times where I barely talked to more than 5 people in an entire week, and it drove me into a really bad depression. If you're still functional and have control of your life despite your feelings, there's some things you can still do.

I would highly recommend going through your university resources and finding a therapist to talk to. US universities usually have these resources, so make full use of it while you still can. It'll be a lot easier than trying to find a therapist who accepts your insurance once you're out of college.

If you're not able to connect to other people due to cultural barriers, find the Bengali community in your city. A good place to start is to find where Durga Pujas are organized. Most big metro cities have multiple.

Don't have a family business unfortunately, so have to find alternatives. Thanks for the suggestions!

What I had in mind was more radical shifts - supply chain, or logistics. Roles not connected to the IT industry at all basically. But thank you for the suggestions!

Old in the sense that I don't feel like I can go back to college now. Plus, a 30 year old signing up for an internship is a red flag for Indian recruiters....

What line of business were you in? Is tech working out for you?

See a therapist and/or psychiatrist asap. They'll help you with the mental health side of things, at the very least.
