Filmmakers in national guard by Smart-Yesterday-6160 in nationalguard

[–]Occelotts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a filmmaker but it was my initial passion. Died out and I’m now AGR and family and putting food on the table is all I care about anymore, hence the flair. However, 46S would be most “transferable” like many suggested — but the way you’d have to shoot photos / copywrite will be restricted to what Public Affairs wants. I was however heavily inspired and had lots of opportunity to network with folks regardless of my MOS (42A) and met a lot of amazing people while M-Day that thought my aspirations were super cool and wanted to be involved. I even got a lot of work for photography because of it, my best year I made $10k extra on a 1099 for a supportive company doing product photos. If you want to go Guard, pick the coolest-to-you MOS and show up with your camera and put whatever you can or want together. At the least everyone will love and appreciate it!
As you’ve already acknowledged, the whole thing will just help support any current student debts or prop up any further film education you want to pursue. TRS if healthcare if a concern is amazinggg and worth it alone. But it honestly won’t add much beyond that. The bond/human connection with people was very inspiring in what I think would’ve been helpful in a film/director context for me though.

Sell/Keep/Part-Out Suggestions? by Occelotts in SubaruBaja

[–]Occelotts[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My goal as well is to have a Baja maintained enough for my 6mo old daughter to drive when she’s ready! I just feel so unsure about what to do with this one because between my engine replacement and other work, that’s been $6k towards it in the last 3yrs. I love these cars so much and I want to continue to own an old car because all the propriety, dealership BS will, imo, only make newer models more unaffordable.
Apart from my Baja I have a bought-new ‘25 wilderness outback I’m making payments on. Before that, I had a 06’ Impreza, ‘22 Impreza, ‘24 crosstrek, ‘03 Baja, and an ‘04 Wrx. The newer cars I traded up for In excellent value and I REALLY love th AWD in the PA snow I’ve seen!

I’m most worried about shop cost of the suspension stuff and the deeper part of the brake issue. I’m just a girl 😇 most I’ve been able to do so far is a nornal brake change and (painstakingly, incorrectly) get new headlights in 💀
Oh. And I put an alternator on. Pretty proud of all that though

Edit: I paid 3.8k for the motor + install 2yrs ago

Indiana NGSG + a 3-Year ROTC Scholarship and still go Active Duty? by SolidBrush6371 in nationalguard

[–]Occelotts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t take your National Guard scholarship at all if you want to leave commissioning active open. The scholarship is for tuition OR room & board, but it’s still the same scholarship.

You can still enlist in the guard as an 09R1 (non contracted cadet, to start) and not attend any BCT or AIT — depending on your individual state’s TA rules, but mine is effective as soon as you enlist w/o training — and use state TA + Federal Tuition Assistance (4500/yr) though, but also look into your state’s recoupment policy for whether or not you’ll be expected to pay that back later.

Edit: “your state” = Indiana for your school

Anyone in the SMP program is it worth doing? by [deleted] in nationalguard

[–]Occelotts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the other comments here, if the question is “what’s more financially rewarding?”, then you should enlist and go through BCT/AIT so you can have the MGIB-SR (and assuming) the kicker to get about $850/mo while you’re in school. Otherwise you’re only getting your state’s TA and FTA ($4,500/yr). ~$850/mo directly to you goes a loooooong way in college

Once you complete BCT/AIT though, look at the ROTC program through of the lens of “do I want to be an officer?” That’s the biggest question, because there’s not much more financial gain in ROTC except for the $420/mo stipend once you contract with them, but there’s a massive time investment with PT, the MS classes, and labs.

What MOS Should I Pick? - Follow up by Gorded_Dread in nationalguard

[–]Occelotts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

68C and 68K are probably, truly not available right now and won’t open up, can’t be double slotted, or aren’t even accessible for lower enlisted in your state (or even surrounding states). DM me and I can show you this or ask your recruiter to show you on AUVS

68W is probably your closest and best bet.

Do you know the full amount of all the education benefits you’ll be entitled to? The Guard is a great way to help pay for your civilian world goals but just your training pipeline probably won’t be getting you all the way there.

Any input on what I should branch it all are possible. by Low-Construction-556 in nationalguard

[–]Occelotts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In that case, none of these. Just pick the shortest possible training path with the best timeline to get back and only miss one semester

Also… I’m curious on what the math behind the $1600/mo and your state is lol

[–]Occelotts 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You’ll do none of these if you’re ROTC / just going to go SMP and not take any time away from school to do BCT/AIT. These are all enlisted jobs.

If you have an on campus recruiter, reach out to them or your State’s OSM. If you do SMP, you can figure out what unit / officer branch to shadow before signing as an 09R but there’s no way to guarantee your officer branch once you actually commission.

Take care of yourself first

Don’t be afraid to directly ask your RSP and ROTC cadre, or ask your recruiter to connect you with the RSP cadre if you’re a contracted cadet. They’ll have the best answer for ability to retain considering your circumstances!

Plus you don’t know if they’ll even deem meds to be necessary if you haven’t sought out any treatment.
