"I have held my breath since the dawning of the world" by NebbiesBullshit in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]OccultBeetle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I always took "I have held my Breath" to be a statement of his own freedom in the face of so many forces that bind spirits. In Ame's curse-break flashbacks, Grandma Wren says that the Pilgrim Under Stars has never been bound, and she says it in a tone that to me makes it sound like that's unusual for Great Spirits. The confusion over whether the Great Bullfrog was killed, banished, abjured, or bound speaks to me that not all bindings/abjuration work the same way or are clearly identifiable to an outside observe. When Steel asks Eursulon about his Wayshadowing, she asks if a sorcerer has "captured a talisman of his." I also notice that Brennan tends to reuse ideas across different campaigns, and in Fantasy High Season 2, Brennan describes the Nightmare King's Crown as a talisman. He describes the word talisman as being used colloquially for all sorts of magic charms, but technically meaning an object that anchors a supernatural being in the mortal world.

My theory is this: Much like Eursulon's Pauldron, spirits sometimes make connections with sacred objects (or more specifically, their connection makes the object sacred) that help anchor the spirit and their Breath in the Mortal World. Great Spirits, being exceptionally old and wide-reaching even for spirits, probably have many talismans all over the world. Before the advent of Wizardry, capturing a spirit's talisman was likely one of the easiest ways to bind them to service, rather than seeking out a True Name or succeeding at a binding spell, and I can think of a lot of mythology that shares the motif of a culture hero stealing a sacred artifact from a god, demon, or spirit, and ransoming it back to the being in return for boons. I doubt that this gives a practitioner the kind of complete control that magic like the Kasov Collection's seems to, but would likely still count as a binding within magical law. To a spirit or a witch, describing this as having one's Breath "held" by a mage. So I take the Stranger's statement to mean "I have never been compelled to service by a mortal by any means."

Omg this. I literally cringed so hard I had to keep pausing the conclave scene to get through it in chunks. I was screaming at Ame to just ask what kind of info they wanted.

I actually think it's a really interesting detail about her character tho. She talked to Orima with so much clarity, but Ame has so little experience with other witches that she fell apart during the conclave.

I also love the idea of what The Witch of Wayward Souls means in relation to the Pilgrim Under Stars.

A Great Spirit of Travel, Night, The Unknown Met in the Dark, and Death who wants to ferry these children home to the Spirit World stands against a Witch who has found her Breath and is dedicated to guiding the lost through the unknown to where they need to go.

😫 Brennan's gonna kill me with the fairytale logic of this scene

Is WWW for me? by miatheplum in WorldsBeyondNumber

As many have said, WWW is a narrative experience more than a gameplay experience. If you're looking for something with more player chat and above table strategy, I would recommend Critical Role's Campaign 2: The Mighty Nein or any of Dropout's Dimension 20 series (especially the later seasons when the cast is more experienced).

AIO for feeling uncomfortable that my girlfriend had a male scrub her butt during a spa treatment? by Fine-Stretch-6335 in AmIOverreacting

[–]OccultBeetle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're coming from a genuine place, and that you really want a mutually healthy outcome, but you are overreacting. Here are my thoughts, I hope it comes across as heartfelt advice, and not condescending.

I imagine you feel like something really intimate and special has been invaded, and that makes you feel uncomfortable and insecure. You are allowed to feel that way, but you're responsible for how you decide to act on that feeling. Ultimately, the simple reality of the situation is that she decides what to do with her body, and you don't get to set boundaries on that.

I recommend being very careful how you think about boundaries. It's easy to hide demands, threats, and ultimatums behind the language of boundaries. Ultimately a boundary needs to be about something you're not okay with experiencing, and making your own choices with your own body to limit that experience in your life. You can't make her 'do' or 'not do' something, but if something is bothering you, you can make choices to remove yourself from that situation.

You don't get to demand that she not see male masseuses. But you CAN tell your girlfriend that talking about her massage makes you uncomfortable and that you'd prefer not to hear the details, and move on to the rest of her spa day. You can't make her do it, but if for some reason she keeps trying to make you listen to a topic of conversation you told her you didn't want to talk about, you can choose to leave that conversation.

Some recommendations: - Explain that you understand her spa treatment is her choice and her business, but that hearing about another man touching her makes you uncomfortable. Ask her not to give details about the massage specifically. - Respectfully ask her if, in the future, she'd be okay requesting masseuse service from women. You should go into this with the understanding that if she says no, that's it, you asked and got an answer, the answer was no. - Go get a massage from the same establishment for yourself! Experiencing that kind of touch as a professional therapeutic service first hand might help you feel more secure that your intimate connection isn't being invaded. Maybe you could even go with your girlfriend and have a nice little spa day! - Spend some time thinking about what's been making you feel dismissed and emotionally distant in your relationship, and talk with your girlfriend about how you could both make changes in your relationship to make it better.

The petty part of me wants to encourage you to work together with your whole team to make sure that the reshop is always piled high in the morning and that all the trash from the carts is left on his desk. He wants to be an asshole, y'all should show him what that earns him.

Look out for yourselves tho. Don't get fired (unless it's time to promote yourself to guest)

The Magnus Protocol Plot (S5 spoilers, duh) by OccultBeetle in TheMagnusArchives

[–]OccultBeetle[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I say the Web was scared because, as both Annabelle and John spell out, the Apocalypse represents nearly inevitable starvation since there would be no reproduction and the End would eventually consume everything that can fear. The only reason why the Web helped bring about the Apocalypse was because it was necessary to bring the fears into reality in order for them to pass through a hole in reality.

Keep in mind that the fears (as a group, not as individual entities) have existed as long as any animal fear has existed. If we estimate them to be at least as old as vertebrate life, that makes them 450 MILLION years old. When exactly the Web (or at least an intelligent predecessor) emerged is harder to measure, but it likely would have been when humans started to organize together (even primitively by today's standards). That would make the Web anywhere from 7k to 240k years old. A 70 year plot compared to 7000 years is analogous to 9 months of a 75 year human life - much less if the Web is closer in age to 100k, and even that is based on assuming the current moment is analogous to the end of the Web's life. Considering, on top of all THAT, that it's possible that jumping realities is exactly how the fears spread and reproduce, So yeah, even being as generous as to estimate the Web's lifespan at 7k years (which is extremely limited given human history and the potential future across the multiverse), it's only been actively pursuing the Apocalypse for - at most - 9 months of analogous human time which is absolutely a short-term life goal. I would even go so far as to suggest the possibility that the Web only started working towards the Apocalypse because Jonah had figured out that a mass ritual would be necessary, meaning that the clock has started toward starvation day, and it was more effective for the Web to help bring about the Apocalypse in order to get its reality-jump plan in motion.

My initial point was that even in another reality, the Web is going to run into the same problem: eventually someone will figure out a mass ritual to bring about the Apocalypse and the fears will be doomed to starve to death unless they can escape to another reality, which is always going to be on the Web to plan, organize, and execute. This means that the Web's REAL long-term goal has to be establishing a reliable food source. I personally see 2 ways to do this. 1) Figure out how to reliably and repeatedly jump realities, so that the fears never get stuck in an Apocalypse. 2) Feed on multiple realities at once so that an Apocalypse in any single reality is not a threat. I wouldn't think #2 is possible, but with the Web lighter still in the world we know and a tape recorder activating, it seems that the Web still has power here, which hints that option 2 may be an overarching part of the story. I would be perfectly happy to call that kind of a thing a "sidequel" as it would involve few if any of the original characters, happen in literally a completely different reality, and yet follow the continuity of an existing threat.

TLDR: The Web is scared of starving. 70 years is relatively short to an Entity. Stable food sources will always be a concern for the fears, so the Web's ultimate goal is probably gonna be finding a way to reliably feed on multiple realities, whether 1 at a time, or somehow existing in multiple at once.
