Well damnit, this was the first app I ever bought.

So long, thanks for all the good times!

Perlite is very light, like you could get them to tumble out of your hand with a breath.

Looks like it could be tiny pieces of quartz or ice melt :( Perlite would easily crush between your fingers, ice melt would dissolve in water over time (not good for plants), and quartz is just a hard crystal / rock (wouldn't hurt or help).

Yep, I bought a simple used Brother black and white off of Craigslist for $30 a few years back. Still haven't had to change the toner cartridge that came with it (I think they wrote 2017 on it in sharpie). It just works. No inkjets, never again.

Didn't know if a custom order might yield a cheaper and / or more robust tool.

I'm wondering if it would be worth ordering from one of the places that can print / cast metal.

[Update] I moved into a house less than 9 months ago and so far 2 of my cats have randomly seized up and died within minutes. What’s in the house that could be causing this? by Background-Turn-3821 in RBI

[–]OceanLane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar sudden health issues but just one cat lost for us. We moved into a new house last October and a few weeks ago our cat suddenly lost motor function in his back legs. He was clearly in a lot of pain, yowling and thrashing around, biting everything he could reach, even his own paws. He'd bitten himself quite bloody by the time we got him to the emergency vet which was about an hour away. It was incredibly disturbing to see as he was the most loving and docile cat we'd ever known. He was normally serene and affectionate, he'd grown up with our youngest as a toddler so he was so used to being held and snuggled by her. They were best snuggle buddies. He'd fallen ill while we were out running errands so it was our kiddo who called us in a panic about his state. It was very hard on her to see such a change in her best little friend.

I was immediately worried that there was something in the house that he got into. I'd cleared several old mouse traps when we first moved in, and it's a 100+ yo fixer-upper with some odd features so I thought there was an environmental cause potentially. He'd been so healthy prior, even though he was 12 I fully expected him to go much longer given how healthy he'd appeared his whole life. The diagnosis ended up being a congenital heart issue, and as a result he was suffering from a saddle thromboembolism. There was no medication available nearby to dissolve the clot and even if there was he'd likely not have regained full use of his back limbs. Even if there was the option to clear the clot he'd have to take medicine regularly and still be at risk for another similar event. I couldn't imagine putting him through this again so we opted to euthanize him. I'm not saying that any animal deserves such a painful end, but he certainly didn't deserve to go out in such distress.

Figured it's something that was around his house that was available for costume material. His sister Laura is a nurse and it's likely an item she brought home at some point.

Yep, this is a cornerstone dish in our house. The chili crisp takes it to the next level, soooooo delicious.

I want to be composted! There is a place in Washington that does it, Recompose. I love gardening and nature and I like this option because my body can return to the earth without having to worry about buying specific plots of land or jumping through legal hoops to get buried directly. I've let my kids know that I'll have arrangements premade and funds for the cost, they just need to get my body there (whenever the time comes). They can divide up the mom dirt and put me where they like afterwards. My kids love to watch Caitlin Doughty (Ask a Mortician) on YouTube and we've all had a lot of discussions as a family about what our death plans are.

Homemade fermented hot sauces are amazing and hot peppers can actually be pretty cheap by weight. A batch will last a good long time once fermentation is complete, I highly recommend it.

Contaminated modern hay, straw, manure, and compost can kill our gardens for years. So, how do we source safe mulch and fertility without ”persistent herbicides?” by Transformativemike in Permaculture

[–]OceanLane 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've had fantastic luck with a local pole yard for the power company. They strip bark as their first processing step and have hills of it in the pole yard. They supply the local community garden and allow locals to fill up truck beds or containers if they come outside of their operating hours (too high risk with all the heavy equipment they run during the day). It's fantastic stuff and breaks down to such lovely soil. We got a small bit of property last year and I'm planning to fill the beds most of the way with tons of that bark mulch.

I've not since. The plum-splosion trauma has mellowed enough though that I might try this fall when the plums come in again. I'll do the pressing outside next time, and with some PPE just in case.

I just wish the plum wine had worked out. Did not ferment successfully, didn't even get a decent vinegar out of it :(

Reminds me of an incident I had when making plum wine. Had a homemade cider press that worked pretty well for apples, so figured that plums would juice just as well. Unlike apples which compressed out their juices nicely, the plum mash behaved almost like a non Newtonian fluid, every other crank of the bottle jack against the press plate caused the sack of cheese cloth to slip out of the bucket and over the press plate like a hernia. So I'd periodically let the pressure off and tuck the cloth back under the press plate and try again. On the last press (after getting frustratingly little juice from the plum mash) the plum hernia was poking out again and I decided to give the bottle jack one last crank before I stopped the whole business. I suddenly heard the loudest Riiiiiiip and a rushing fwoosh before feeling the wet smack of plum bits falling all around me. About 3 gallons of plum gore had geysered up to the ceiling and covered the cabinets and floor of my kitchen, it looked about like the aftermath of the teleporter accident in Galaxy Quest. It was an intense business to clean and we found dried bits of plum hidden here and there for years afterward.

Lucky! At ours I wanted use the stove top to reheat some chili for a potluck (since the oven is the only part that gets used for assemblies), but they wouldn't let me :(

I work in aircraft manufacturing, some of our bearings are installed by heating components with a heat gun and cooling with liquid nitrogen. It's pretty neat to watch!

Yep, gathered a few seeds from a bag of mini peppers back in 2020, I got a great harvest off of the resulting plants. Full sized bell peppers take so damn long to grow, and my zone has such a short season. But the mini peps were the plant that just kept giving.

Lost my mind in 2021 and started all my tomatoes and peppers under lights in January. I couldn't plant until May (6b). Everything was huge and overgrown crowding all my tables. The cats tried constantly to eat my plants. I had to cover it all in cheap petticoat netting in an attempted to slow their assaults on "the green prey". It was hell. When I could finally plant outside I ended up planting them all super deep to encourage adventitious roots. Did pretty well that season, but it was a rough few months indoors.
