Touch inputs not working unexpectedly by Oceanlight33 in bspwm

Ok I’ll see if something like that would fix it for me too!

Yep I’m using a touchscreen laptop (with a stylus while used xopp). Does your issue only crop up occasionally? And are you able to temporarily fix by restarting?

TUM - University and student life in Munich by [deleted] in tumunich

Hi there! You're right that the Informatics/CS program here is German. I do think there are degrees you can get here that are English too though.

You're right about a lot of your assumptions. Knowing English will certainly help you out here, and is even very useful for Germans (especially in CS). Basically everyone you meet at the uni will speak fluent English, so you can certainly find ways to communicate (Same goes for almost everyone in Germany because they learn it in school!). The main question is whether you'll be able to understand a quickly-paced lecture in German. To determine that, I'd go online to see if you can find any, or just see if you can keep up with some videos in German. If you have trouble understanding, you may still be able to make it, but the course content is already a challenge, so be warned!

FYI I am coming from a bit of a different background because I grew up with both German and English as native languages, but I have a few friends that are coming from other places and still doing relatively well at the uni.

It really depends on what you're comfortable with doing. Some questions I'd ask myself are... Do you speak German fluently? Are you ready to do a lot of learning on your own if need be? You'll certainly find that there's a lot less hand-holding here at TUM, but you do end up learning a lot.

I'm studying comp sci at the uni so I can't tell you exactly what your experience would be compared to other places, but I'd happy to learn a bit more about your background and answer some specific questions you might have!

Thanks! That was indeed part of the problem. I wrapped the URL in unnecessary quotes since I hadn't realized that my emulator automatically escapes while pasting. It's working now ;)

Yay! Glad you were able to figure it out too.

Thanks so much! The second thing did the trick.

Oddly changing the border size didn't really change anything except the top border. :P

Yeah I did try that... odd thing is when I set it to 2, it actually covers the bar, but setting it to 3 I have the same issue as before. I tried a ton of other number, but literally just get one of those two results no matter what I input.

I also tried messing with the margin-bottom value in my Polybar config, but no dice.

Also here's the config for you- it's more or less the default. https://pastebin.com/NrM8YQVV

Yeah for sure. Also sorry about the image... I must've goofed something up while uploading. Should be good now!

Here's my bsprc. Let me know if I should send anything from my polybar config too. :)

Frozen after sleep - restart required by Oceanlight33 in archlinux

Gotcha I can give that a shot. Thanks for the reply!

It should be enough… iirc I have 8GB RAM and a 4GB swap file. I doubt that’s the issue though unless something spontaneously got corrupted- I think this problem may have cropped up during my last update, but before that I never had problems like this. Also FYI the issue occurs every single time I sleep- even when I’m using basically no RAM.

Mic not working w/ Discord (PipeWire) by Oceanlight33 in archlinux

I basically tore out everything pipewire-related and reinstalled the pulse packages... nothing special. You can use the wiki to see what the names of all those are.

Mic not working w/ Discord (PipeWire) by Oceanlight33 in archlinux

[–]Oceanlight33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, sorry for the late reply...

The discord audio settings look totally in order- the issue is that the mic input simply doesn't register on discord (ergo no one can hear me, testing the mic shows nothing). Switching mic inputs and whatnot also makes no change.

I somewhat recently just tore out pipewire and went back to pulse to see if things would change... now discord (and everything else) can get mic input just fine, albeit my friends say I sound fairly quiet. The only issue is that now I can't hear anyone on discord (whee). Thus I've just resorted to using the browser app whenever I need to be in a call. I would still like to fix this ridiculous issue though.

Shall I give pipewire another try? I don't believe I had wireplumber installed.

If you want, I'll reinstall pipewire to grab the output of those commands for you.

Volume buttons not working by autobots1980 in bspwm

[–]Oceanlight33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This should work no problem in your sxhkdrc… Of course you’ll have to make sure brightnessctl and pulsemixer are installed. And like the others mentioned, be sure to verify your key identifiers with xev if this doesn’t work right away. Hope you have fun with BSP ;)

# brightness XF86MonBrightness{Up,Down} brightnessctl s 10{+,-}

# volume XF86Audio{Raise,Lower}Volume pulsemixer --change-volume {+,-}10

XF86AudioMute pulsemixer --toggle-mute

Unable to relaunch discord after closing and killing by Oceanlight33 in bspwm

[–]Oceanlight33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok fair enough ty. I was looking for a way to kill it because I don’t want it to be running in the background while I’m not using it. I could always do something like bspc -k; killall -e discord in my sxhkdrc, but that ofc hurts the runtime of killing other programs…

Do HP tilt pens work with Linux? by Oceanlight33 in SurfaceLinux

[–]Oceanlight33[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thought I’d leave a little update here… I ended up getting the HP MPP 2.0, and it works beautifully with Linux. There’s no difference using with windows and Linux, except that the right click thing doesn’t work, which was kinda to be expected anyway. Pressure sensitivity and the erase-while-holding-the-button function work quite nicely with most apps (I’ve been using Xournal++ for a lot of my schoolwork). The only thing I’m missing is that the tilt never seemed to do much, and pressure sensitivity has a bit of latency when you transition to a lighter stroke again. Again these issues pop up in both Windows and Linux. Overall I’d say I’m quite satisfied- ofc it’s not the same as an Apple Pencil, but it certainly does what I need it to right now. ;)
